    they need some training . . .
Policewoman shot dead on L.I. & NYPD beau eyed as killer

A Brooklyn cop was shot dead early yesterday in the Long Island home she shared with her boyfriend, a fellow NYPD officer, Suffolk County cops said.

He was suspended from the department last night although he had not been charged in the case, police sources said.

  • Condolences and sympathy to her family, children, and friends. And colleagues, for that matter.

As far as domestic violence on the force, I do recall reading studies showing that police officers exhibited higher rates of suicide, alcoholism, and domestic violence than the "regular" population. There was a domestic shooting earlier this year in Staten Island involving a former officer. Actually, more than one, now that I think about it. I don't have time to search out a study right now, but you could probably find some with minimal effort.

My thoughts? You are dealing with a high stress job and as such it is reflected in their whole lives. I don't believe that it reflects poorly on the quality of police officers at all. I believe that it does show the need to invest funds and research into making sure that the mental health of our officers is well protected through whatever means are found to be effective.

Having said all that, may Sonia Garcia rest in peace, and heartfelt condolences to all who knew, loved, and miss her.

When you engage in a job or other activity where you either have the authority to use force which includes deadly force you're going to have instances where that force is going to used outside of the "work place". I don't think it has much to do with mental health per say, but when you have the authority to act in certain ways it becomes all to easy to act in those ways when you're not operating in an official capacity especially if you get stressed.

Interesting take. I'm not sure I agree with it. But it is definitely food for thought. Initially, my argument would be that the vast majority of police officers never use deadly force or fire their guns in the course of their careers. I'm not sure that I buy that having the authority to use deadly force in an official capacity increases the likelyhood of using deadly force outside of that capacity. Another argument would be that the increased rates of divorce, alcoholism, etc. in law enforcement officers is not something that they do in official capacity. I would think that the application of deadly force in a domestic situation would fall more under that than under the umbrella of acting out things they are allowed to do in an official capacity. But it is worth considering.
