People who let their dogs do the leading...

What kind of maroon does that? What kind of soft towel lets there dog pull them down the block? 10' ahead? I mean, who's the master? Teach your dog to heal and make him or her walk next to you on the left. What's the point of having a dog if one isn't going to train it? Jeez, if people only knew how stupid they look letting their dogs pull them down the block, they might not let them do it.

80% of dog owners don't know any better (which is bad enough), but the worst ones are the idiots with the satisfied grin as their "tough" dogs pull'em down the block. Uh, hello? You've got this proud smirk on your face as your dog tells everyone around that you ain't shit and that s/he's in charge? -
I know I've told this story before somewhere on these forums, but it bears repeating here -- I have a biggish scar on my left forearm from some dipshit who had a German Shepherd let out all the way on one of those retractable leashes at a music festival. He was walking towards me on my left and his dog suddenly took off running after something on my right and clotheslined me, and it left a huge friction burn that hurt like hell and took several weeks to heal.
So yeah, this is a big peeve of mine as well. It's seriously dangerous. -

It's a blonde colored mastiff (not the brown brindled color), and the guy is bald, middle-aged.
The dog is friendly; I like mastiffs. My aunt has one. It's just not cool to let it roam freely and come up to unfamiliar dogs on the sidewalk. My dog starts out super-friendly, but then snaps at other dogs without warning. That can lead to a dog fight, so I try to keep him away from unknown dogs. This bozo assumed that I was afraid of his dog because it was big. Kept saying but he's friendly! which is SO not the point. Guy is a self-righteous idiot. -
I like to take my dog with me when I walk for exercise. Avoiding other dogs on the sidewalk is my No. 1 Problem.
Don't assume that my dog wants to say hi to your dog, just because she's cute. My pit doesn't care for other dogs. She's a people loving fool, but will get testy with other dogs. Since she's a pit, she will get blamed if there's a fight. So no, I don't want to say hi to your dog. I just want to walk without you and your dog getting up in my face.
Please train your dog. It's not cruel to train your dog. A trained dog is much happier and more pleasant to be around than a spoiled surrogate child dog. I see people all the time with spoiled dominant dogs they physically cannot control. In Park Slope one night last week, a growling golden retriever hauled its owner across the sidewalk to get at us. The woman had no control over it whatsover. She finally had to drag it behind a park bench before we could safely proceed.
Another aggressive mutt, harnessed with a retractable leash, came right up in my dog's face snarling after we repeatedly went out of our way to avoid its unwanted advances. The idiot owner just stood there staring as his dog's teeth flashed inches from my pit's face. I yelled at him and he finally snapped out of it to reel in his "fish", but jeez.
People, please get a clue, dogs are not little humans. You need to be the boss. And please respect other people on the sidewalk, keep your dog well away from them unless they ASK to play with it! Thank you. -
watch the dog whisperer. Great show with simple but effective lessons FOR HUMANS. Yes, thats right, he trains humans how to interact with their dogs. You'll be happier and in control, and the dog will also be happier because it will know who is the boss in all situations = less stress about roles. great show.

the one i've come across is more of a white pyrenees, but skinnier, not as fluffy/thick

its owner is an aggressive, over-testosteroned middle-aged bald white guy, on the latter part of 50
he lets his dog run up to unfamiliar smaller dogs as he finds it amusing to see his dog try to dominate them
the couple of times i've bumped into him have been in prospect park near the grand army plaza entrance -
There's this lady on Butler Place with a rather tough, aggressive looking mutt. This dog pulls her to the point where she's pushing back her glasses and is clearly skipping along to where the dog pulls her. I have no idea if the dog is friendly or not - but clearly it is dominant. She has no control whatsoever of this dog and it's so obnoxious.
Why get a strong breed if you can't handle it? -
People who let their dogs do the leading...
...should be fed to rabid cats! -
I think a lot of dog owners believe it's impossible to teach a dog to heal, but it's really not very difficult. Sometimes it can just take a some time and patience, and it can be easier than that, even. All a person has to do is look online for advice, or catch a show on cable. Human feeds dog, dog obeys human.

What about the guy who owns the defunct laundry mat on the corner of St.J's and Underhill? That guy has at least 2 dogs that I see on the weekends on the sidewalk w/out a leash. I cannot count the number of times I have seen him taking them to the park, crossing GAP w/out leashes on. Stupid. That's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Makes me nervous everytime I pass his dogs. I pick up my children to pass him and I shouldn't have to. :!:

Amen!! The key to training dogs is training the owners. It's cruel to the dog not to be trained. There's an excellent trainer in the Park named Thierry Frith. Check him out.

That big dog got away from that lady tonight. I saw the dog bolt through GAP with no leash.. then the lady walked by about five minutes later. Not sure if she was able to catch it...
