Security bars on windows facing street? — Brooklynian

Security bars on windows facing street?

I'm new to the area. Can anyone give me a sense of how safe 21st street is around 5th avenue? Trying to decide whether or not my (ground floor) street-facing windows will require security bars. They are easily accessible from the sidewall. Anyone?

Thanks!!

  • Welcome.

I think bars are more of a "state of mind," sorry to sound philosophical.

5th And 21st St. is VERY safe, as is the majority of Greenwood Hts.

I live on 23rd St and am one of the few houses on the block with bars on our first floor windows. The lady who lived here before's son was a police officer...you get the picture. We considered taking them out, but we were so used to bars on ANY window in our former Ft. Greene digs that we said heck with it.

If bars make you feel safer, then definitely do it. Just remember, if someone really wants to break in they will...like our contractor did when he forgot his keys back when we gut reno'd our home. Nice touch to the job. He had to repair the locks on the bars.

    I think you'll see my point. :)
  • I would do it. Burglaries can happen anywhere.
