shocking! line at Tom's before 10 a.m. on a saturday!
Subject: shocking! line at Tom's before 10 a.m. on a saturday!
on the completely spastic Saturdays that I wake up before noon, I generally wake up sometime before 10 a.m. usually I'm starving. like today. I headed over to Tom's at 9:30 and there was a line all the way to the door!! that NEVER happens (or at least didn't). hilariously, a woman behind me asked if she was waiting in line to give her name or needed to head to the front of the line. I was kinda cranky and freezing and just said "you wait" or something like that. if you're reading, sorry - I was hungry and recovering from too much JD the night before.thankfully, the chili omelet with cheddar and grits and a diet coke made me feel like a human being again.
in any case, looks like folks are coming out to neighborhood spots even earlier than usual. kinda scary. but good for local biz.

i also live on the same block as Tom's, and it never fails to amaze me how long, and through what sorts of weather, these folks will line up for to dine there. I've eaten there only twice -- it was okay, but nothing spectacular. It's hard to believe one wouldn't choose to simply walk to a much tastier restaurant in the same time it takes for you to stand on the sidewalk, appeased whenever the poor wait-service spills outside offering cookies and orange slices.

I hear you. that's why I usually only go when I wake up to my version of the ass-crack of dawn on a saturday. and I'm way too lazy to leave the block on a saturday ... and I'd fall asleep waiting for service at shane (seriously, the chicken & waffles are tempting but I'm scared I'll fall asleep ...) -
Tom's was featured in the AM paper about month ago or so.
You might have been waiting in line with some Manhattanites  -

deacon blue = too far
shane = too slow
tom's line = moves really fast and they give you coffee. -
I walked in Tom's at 9:02 this Saturday and the line was already to the door. People are getting up too early for weekend breakfast these days.

Tom's is not a bad line to wait in. They come by with the coffee, sugar, and milk as well as the cookies and orange wedges. Throw in the fact that it's a nice neighborhood blend and no shocker to chill out for 10 minutes while waiting for a table. -
if i wasnt working on the weekends ;P. i be sleeping in, damn you folks wakeup early.

I was painfully hungover. coffee, grease, eggs, etc. = required hangover cure. -
i thought drinking tons of water, pissing and sleep was the cure

there are many hangover cures. some are mild - a few advil and a glass of water. others, more extreme: the bloody mary, mimosa or screwdriver. there's one in the middle though, which can be dealt with in an extreme way, and can also be dealt with using grease, eggs and coffee. tobasco helps, too. some people also think smearing vicks vapo rub all over your face helps.
.
I'm pretty sure if I'd just drunk WAY more water, I'd have been okay, slept til noon and totally missed the horrifying line at Tom's before 10 a.m. phenomena. but the line not so bad - the coffee component was there. the wait, though, made me crave a bloody mary so I had a chili omelet. -
I like waiting in that line. It's the only line where I get coffee, cookies and oranges. I'd get out more if I got snacks just for waiting patiently.

Ah yes, the shampoo effect. Why suffer when you can just repeat, and with an immediate lather to boot. (oops, poor choice of words, hah...)
Ah, college. -

Yeah, I'm 42 and I haven't had a painful hangover since I was 41.
I do like the chili cheese omelet with grits cure though. I'll try that next time. -
Hah, well perhaps 42 was the answer after all.
Now where did those mice get to... -

we'll just have to wait until someone waiting in line at tom's gets mugged by some teenagers!

I've been going to Tom's for 7 years now, and waiting in line can actually make the food taste better (you're starving by the time you get in). A couple of weeks ago though, my folks came to visit, and I didn't want to subject them to line waiting. We went to Teddy's and I must say, it was tasty. The service was, as always, very friendly and welcoming, and we weren't rushed out. And sorry Shane, but you need to include toast with your egg dishes. It's just not right otherwise.
Howdy, Stranger!
