that place has seemed to die before....

i'll believe it when i see the stake through the heart.
  • And burn the body
  • Yeah, we've heard this before. I won't believe it until I see a new business in there, or at least a "For Rent" sign.
  • But has there ever been a sign up in the window announcing its closing before? I'm curious about exactly what the sign says, and not likely to get over to Vandy tonight -- is that were you got the info about it moving to Washington, parrothead?
  • She'll pretty reopen it there under a new name similar to her Chocolate Monkey scam.
  • I also wonder where on Washington she is planning to go. At the moment I see a lot of empty spots. Hoping that those condos near St Marks aren't discourage by the empty spots.

By the way, I heard that 2 banks are being put in on Franklin. It's going to be the next hot spot of the PH-CH-Weeksville area.
  • where did you hear the banks are going to be?
  • Here's a quick fly-by snap of the sign from this morning:

Sorry for the angle, but it was tricky to get it all in one shot through the metal gate.

Windows are papered up and rental sign is up (as others mentioned), definitely closed.

So, what next in that spot?

    (Home Heating Oil? heehee...)

Sorry, didn't get the details. I believe one is a Bank of America.

I wonder if Washington is getting skipped over for new businesses to get into.

apparently most of the empty retail space on washington isn't very large. it annoys me that one of our precious spaces will be seized by insane lady. hopefully she's moving in on the north end - I hate the idea of having to see her on a regular basis.
  • What space does she occupy on Flatbush? I must know so that I never ever provide it with any business.

Well Lounge, the bar formerly known as Chocolate Monkey.
  • I wonder if this means no Muddy Waters anymore, or if The Well will become Muddy Waters now? Either way, I've no real plans to visit. Between the 2 other coffee places in that neck of the woods (Muddy Waters), and my being pregnant (The Well) there's no need. :)
  • i have an objection to this thread title. "Run out" makes one infer that the proprietor of Muddy Waters was a victim of gentrification, higher rents, chain stores, and so on. This may be the case, but from what I've seen, experienced, and read about, she is just a poor businesswoman with a BAD attitude.

It may have just been a play on words -- waters running out/draining away?
  • ahhh. yes.
    waters run dry.
  • Just playing on the name of the place, Fjord, nothing political.

The owner of MW did herself no favors by treating customers, even regulars, poorly.
  • Last night I saw some dude scraping off the MW sign from the window. you cant get much more final than that.

    Awesome :D
  • i'm trying to determine what's happening at the location.

No rent sign + paper in the windows=renovations for new renter?

I reckon that she does not own the storefront, as it's seemingly a part of that large co-op (?) bldg on the corner of Park and Vanderbilt. (Good way to keep maintenance costs down!) But I never saw a "For Rent" sign in the window or anything like that. There's been nothing in the window except for the aforementioned *threat* that we'll have to endure her wicked ways up on Washington Avenue in spring of 2008. So anyone know anything?
  • I was told that the mother of the woman that owns Muddy Waters owns or manages that building. Kind of solves the mystery of “how can that place still be in business?”
  • I would check with your source about Muddy Waters mum, owning that store/building. Not sure about that one.
  • I've always assumed that the space was owned... there is no way to make rent every month with a shit hole like Muddy Waters. I mean the late-Muddy Waters.
  • So sad she's even moving. She should be done.
  • Wasn't there someone who claimed to be her landlord sometime ago (a year or more) and that her lease was ending and she'd be out? Not that that came to fruition, but it does lend some confusion as to who actually owns the space.

As to the new place on Washington - it really is sad. I hope that much maligned Starbucks opens up next door and drives her right back out.

  • I doubt that she'll ever open a place on Washington Avenue. Personally, I believe her sign was a last-ditch effort to save face. She'll be lucky if Well Lounge lasts much longer.
  • so right so right dee dee
  • Looks like the Well Lounge/Chocolate Monkey is gone now too?

I'd "yay" but I want to be sure it's really dead.
