Subject: St. John's btw Underhill/Washington - safe for my mom?

My 62-year old mom is looking to rent an apartment near me, and needing something relatively affordable, is looking at Prospect Heights. She thinks she may have found an apartment on St. John's, but I'm a bit worried about the location. Any thoughts on this area, or on safe spaces in the Heights for a 60-ish single woman who, while scrappy, does not in any sense of the word "kick ass"? Any info would be appreciated!

  • Use the search function to search "crazy lane."
  • I've never had any problems on that block but I know some folks have. the ends of the block near washington on both sides of the street are pretty dark - if I were going to live on that block I'd want to live closer to underhill.
  • I live right on that block, about 5 buildings up from Underhill, across the street from the scaffolding; been here for over 2 years. I'm a single woman, and I've never once felt unsafe here. Everyone seems to be friendly, and I have never had any problems here personally. I think it's a great location.
  • I didn't mean to imply that I agree with the "crazy lane" characterization. I've actually never had a problem on that block at all. It's just that the OP asked what people here thought of the block, and it's been extensively discussed before. I was just too lazy to find the posts myself, so I was telling him/her how to find them.
  • My mom sometimes roughs up other 62 year old women on this block, so I'd definitely watch out for that. She's super territorial.
  • No offense was taken, Carnivore. I am aware of all the crazy lane posts, and I'm not disputing them. Just wanted to chime in with my own personal experience and impression as resident.
  • There have been several robberies in that area lately. It's part of the holiday season up tick in crime.
