Found Cat

We found a big fat male tabby with a white nose shivering in the rain last night on the corner of Franklin and Sterling Pl. Is anybody missing a cat? He was very scared and sweet, but my wife is allergic, and we can't keep him.

I can take a picture if neccesary.

Bless you for rescuing the little fellow! Sadly A LOT of cats get abandoned in this neighborhood. Here are a few tips for you:

In case the kitty is lost, call Animal Care & Control, which keeps a database of lost/found pets, to report that you found him (212 788 4000). Put up "Found Cat" flyers in the neighborhood (but for the cat's safety, it's a good idea to ask any potential claimants to bring a photograph to prove ownership).

If you can't foster him, try the following list of shelters, but bear in mind that due to the pet population crisis in this city, sometimes there's a waiting list:

Bear in mind, too, Animal Care & Control does euthanize and therefore should be viewed as a last resort only.

If the kitty has been vetted (tested and vaccinated), he stands a better chance of getting into a shelter. (I can suggest some low-cost vet options if you need 'em).

Flyers, craigslist, this board, and emailing killer-cute photos to everyone you know can be very effective in finding a foster or adoptive home. I've done it many, many times! Before you adopt the kitty out however, please read about the dangers of "free to good home" (www.petrescue.com/library/free-pet.htm). It’s important to carefully screen potential adopters, so that the cat ends up in a safe and permanent home.

"Oliver" was last seen in our backyard on 4th st btwn 7 & 8 avs. He is Grey/brown with black stripes and a white chest, neck and chin. Male, unaltered, 1 yr old.

I agree, Mamacita. Of course the "unaltered" male is going to bolt from the yard.
Geez...I'll bet there are pet leagues that can help guide anyone to places that have discounted spay and neutered locations.
And for those who think it unfair to do this, think of all of the little babies born with no where to live because the parents weren't fixed.
Not a happy thought for their future at all.
