Story of a Brooklyn Basketball Star-- at BAM TOMORROW!!
Through the Fire (2005) 103min
Thu, Sep 7 at 4:30, 7pm*
*Q&A with filmmakers
Directed by Jonathon Hock
This engaging documentary follows Sebastian Telfair, a Coney Island basketball prodigy who's a sure pick for any university. But after a shooting occurs in his building, he considers moving directly to the NBA. The film echoes Hoop Dreams in the way it follows Telfair through his life, but adds another level of media visibility and savvy. Q&A with director Jonathan Hock, co-director Alastair Christopher, editor Steven Pilgrim, and executive producer Diane Houslin after the 7pm screening.
This is the first film screening as part of Brooklyn Close-Up, an ongoing series that looks at films that reflect the diversity and changing landscape of the Borough of Kings. Supported by the Ford Foundation, this new series screens documentaries, shorts, and fiction films with accompanying discussions.
Tickets are only $10

I saw this when it was on ESPN - it's one of the most engaging documentaries I've ever seen on the topic of sports. See it if you can. Sebastian now plays for the Celtics.
