crime in crown heights - near the brooklyn children's museum

Subject: crime in crown heights - near the brooklyn children's museum

Hi there-
We live near the brooklyn children's museum which is great area, if it wasn't for the roving gangs of young men who have attacked my husband twice, and our neighbor and his tenant. The police are saying the crimes were racially motivated -- hate crimes -- as the boys used racial epithets when attacking. My husband is hispanic, and I'm white. The first time my husband ended up in the hospital with stiches above his eye, and this time got lucky with just a few bruised ribs. The spot for all these incidents is always the same -- brower park -- the Kingston avenue side. I'd love to hear if anyone else has had trouble in this area, or thoughts about how to go about dealing with this..its really troubling :-(

Thanks.

  • eek. the only thing i would do is avoid the area (difficult if you live on that block though) and get a can of mace. keep on calling the precinct about those kids, its always the same ones?
  • That sucks. It's not a very good area over there I guess, but there are some really nice houses. Too bad.
  • sorry to hear about the two terrible incidents. I would hope that in 2005 people were teaching their children differently. But there are always a few bad apples that spoil the bunch. I have lived in the neighborhood for four years and I love it but I and on park pl and newyork. I hope things get better for you.
  • That's awful...I'm on Park and Classon (two years) and we haven't had any bad incidents...a few times people have gotten in my husband's face a little bit, but we've always ended up joking around with them and getting away with nothing more than somebody new to say howdy to on the street...but more than once i could easily see it having gone a different way. I hope that continues to be the case.

no, i don't think its a bad area, its just one certain corner that seems to have problems...i guess we just have to keep pressuring the precinct to keep people on the streets in the immediate vicinity of the park...they always complain that they don't have enough $ though...
  • $ should not be your problem, it's their issue.
They should deal with this without making you feel guilty.
Start a neighborhood watch, but be proactive.
  • Like I wrote before, before I it was deleted:
