Eating for Reading: Build Literacy Skills in Brooklyn Schools on #GivingTuesday

Behind the Book has joined the #GivingTuesday movement with support from two Brooklyn restaurants. On Tuesday, December 1st, Cow & Clover in Williamsburg and Chavela's in Crown Heights are coming together to support literacy in their communities by donating a percentage of their proceeds to BtB, a non-profit organization whose mission is to build literacy skills and motivate New York City public school students to become readers for life.

#GivingTuesday is held annually the week after Thanksgiving to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to contribute to their communities.

These two local restaurants have pledged to donate between 10 and 20 percent of their proceeds this week to expand BtB's innovative literacy programs, which bring accomplished authors into under-served classrooms to lead writing and art workshops based on their books.

Now in 14 high-needs schools across the city, including Crown Heights, Bed-Stuy, and Fort Greene, BtB has a waiting list of 15 schools whose students would benefit from its successful literacy programs, which are part of the class curricula and adhere to Common Core Learning Standards.

The goal for the week of December 1st is to raise the $5,000 required to run one classroom program over a semester.

Chavela’s manager Rebecca Brown  says, “We are excited to be collaborating with Behind the Book, and have seen firsthand their programs at work. This past spring Chavela’s had the privilege of hosting a BtB field trip for a group of kindergarteners. It was a fun-filled experience that brought the book they were reading to life. We greatly appreciate what this dedicated organization does in our community and want to support their efforts."

To be a part, please visit Behind the Book's #GivingTuesday page--and enjoy a meal at either (or both!) of these great local eateries.
