Opinions on pain meds after spay/neuter?

I've had dogs and cats my whole life, male and female. I've never had a vet give me pain medication for them after getting fixed. None of them have appeared to need it and were up and running around in a few days. I'm a huge animal lover, it's sort of pathetic actually. I can watch bloody movies involving people but as soon as it looks like an animal might get hurt, it's all over. I've turned movies off half way, changed the channel, and I still can't watch nature shows with predators in them. I'm the first person to notice if any of my pets are in pain. So it's not like they were in pain and I didn't notice.

That being said, I've never felt like any of my pets were in alot of pain after being spayed or neutered. Mostly they slept alot the first day, ate and drank water and bounced back in a couple days. Is it possible that they just weren't expressing it? Or maybe the pain wasn't that bad? For women I think we would be laid up for awhile after getting a hysterectomy. It took me at least a week to feel better after my appendectomy. But I had a laparoscopy 10 years ago and recovered pretty quickly.

What do you guys think?
