St. Johns between Classon Franklin -- GIANT lights — Brooklynian

St. Johns between Classon Franklin -- GIANT lights

I'm about to rent an apartment right off Franklin at St. John's place. I have noticed the police and GIANT lighting array they have up at the corner of Lincoln & Franklin. Is this in response to a specific incident? Does anyone know how long they have been set up there?

Also, what's the general vibe around there? Do y'all feel okay walking from the Franklin stop at night? I've taken a couple of trips down there on my bike and it seemed busy but pretty low-key. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  • I don't live there but I used to run the a little cafe brunch thing there in a bookstore (which is no longer there) and I loved it - the people were really friendly and I always felt safe. Save for one incident where the cops opened fire in the middle of the street at 7pm and I had to duck.

i think it's actually only been there for 6 months or so. last winter, there was a shooting at that intersection. after that happened they stepped up the police presence. parked a huge command post rv on the opposite corner. and planted those bright lights that shine night and day.

i think the shooting was a pretty isolated incident.
i lived around the corner from there for over a year....never felt unsafe. there were always people out and about. and franklin ave is a pretty popular subway stop so there were always a lot of people getting off the train at all hours.
  • I live right there as well, welcome to the neighborhood. I've enjoyed myself thus far and feel comfortable with the place. As for the jaunt to/from the Franklin stop (as was stated earlier) it's pretty popular, so there is almost always people. And the hyped security... well, that's what it's there for. There is still sketchy activity, but it's hard to get away from that anywhere.

My advice is know your neighbors so that you can all look out for one another. That's one of the things I love most about being in Brooklyn.
  • My best friend lived near there on St. Francis for 4 years (she moved out for her own place last summer). She came and went at all hours and never had a problem; nor did I ever encounter any in all my time visiting. People are very friendly and look out for each other--just introduce yourself.

One caveat: it's very noisy in the summertime. Oh, and if you prefer to take cabs, be prepared to be agressive with the drivers and don't ever say "Crown Heights"--many will automatically refuse.

I always get off at Eastern Parkway (4 goes local late night anyway) - its a little more of a walk, but I feel safer approaching the block from the Washington ave direction than the franklin ave direction. My apartment fronts onto St Johns at ground level, and while there is some noise, the Old Folks' Home and the tail end of St Teresa's are both pretty quiet - it gets much louder at the Franklin end of the street.

Do be careful, though - a few fridays ago, my neighbor was pushed into the vestibule of our building, pistol-whipped, and robbed. One of my elderly neighbors said stuff like that used to happen "all the time", but hadn't recently.

There's also a lot of drug activity over on franklin and on Classon at Lincoln.

Hope that helps, and welcome to the Hood!
