Moving to PH/CH (is it a safe area?) — Brooklynian

Moving to PH/CH (is it a safe area?)

I am thinking of moving to Prospect Pl (East of Washington). Wanting to know what locals think of the area. Is it safe to walk home from the subway at night? I have loved the area when visiting, but would love to hear what you might have to say...

  • Have you lived in NYC before? Are you a male/female? Are you comfortable walking around at night? This area is no Upper East Side Shangri-La, but I love living here. Neighbors are friendly, close to the park, farmer's market, museum, etc. This is, by no means, an extension of Williamsburg, and that's why it's great.

But why listen to strangers on a message board. Come here and walk around at different times of the day and gauge your safety level. What's fine to some is freak-the-fuck-out to others.

Are you moving to the Jewish Hospital?
  • I am new to the area and I really love it. I also live in the Jewish Hospital, which I don't recommend, rookie mistake, although the apts. are very nice, new and spacious you save more and get better mangement, I'd guess, by looking elsewhere in the area. However I have found since I have been here I've made friends with a few neighbors down the block, been to their BBQ's, Q's, Starlite, Soda, etc. If you feel comfortable and you're friendly I don't think you can really go wrong anywhere, but it's a personal decision and you should def walk around at night, during the day, etc.
  • Thanks for the advice! I would be moving near the Jewish Hospital, but on the next block, b/w Grand and Classon. I have walked around alone (I am female) after work, around 7PM - 8:30PM and felt pretty safe. There'll always be someone walking around muttering profanities to themselves no matter where you live in this city, I think. I have lived in various areas in Manhattan for 8 years, but I love Brooklyn and I love Prospect Heights. Just was worried about the whole "East of Washington" thing. Some of the posts make it sound a bit scary.
  • JoshB here. Anyway, no one's trying to scare you off: It's just better to know what you're getting into. I've had roommates who moved in and were like, "Holy shit! I'm not living in an antiseptic urban wonderland filled with impeccably beautiful women, strapping gentleman and a bar on every corner."

They lasted as long as a fruit fly. They forgot the one caveat: rent is cheaper for a reason, people.

Anyhoo, Prospect b/w Grand and Classon ain't too bad. There's just some crazy sidewalk basketabll games toward Grand, and the random nutter hanging in front of the bodega on Classon. But there is a lovely crack aficionado who, thanks to an obsessive tic, loves picking up trash. Think of her as a bench player for the sanitation team.

Thanks, but I'm actually a guy. Hey, I try!
  • I feel like my expectations are actually too low after reading some of the Prospect Heights messages. They seem to try to distance themselves from Washington Ave. as much as possible. =) My real concern is walking home from the subway at night and being harrassed. I guess I should take the shuttle instead of the 2,3? Also, it doesn't seem like there is much close by (stores, restaurants, bars). Am I wrong? I've tried walking around to get a sense and even drove around this weekend (but it was raining, and I got lazy). What are some places walking distance from Prospect Pl. b/w Grand and Classon that I could check out to get a sense? Sorry to ask so many questions--you guys are very helpful! Thanks!
  • i walked home from the 2/3 late at night by myself with no problems, but i live along nostrand, which has a high volume of activity at any hour. i usually find that CH is definately at its most annoying on weekdays between the hours of 10 am and 5pm.

eh, that's just because some people are snobs. i wouldn't worry 'bout it too much.

  • I know two different people (women) who live on Prospect Pl btwn Grand and Classon. they both frequently walk home from the subway late at night, carrying purses (including computers), etc. neither of them has had any trouble. that block is largely owner occupied and pretty safe. that said, be smart. people get hurt all over this city (hell, people get stabbed outside of teany) for random reasons.
  • Were I a young female (we can all dream, can't we?) I don't think I would feel thrilled about walking around some parts of the area late at night--I'm thinking of almost deserted streets like Classon. Franklin and Nostrand feel safer because of the amount of people about. Having said that, I haven't felt threatened once, having lived here over eight months now... though my roommate did get mugged at knifepoint in broad daylight outside the Jewish Hospital. I'm not trying to scare anyone, because I don't think that's particularly common and it could happen almost anywhere in New York, but it's worth knowing everything you can know.
  • I walk home after 12 from the Franklin stop down Classon more often than not and I always get home in one piece and often stop at Park & Classon for a turkey sammich and some convo.
  • Once again, thank you all so much for your advice!! I am feeling a lot better about the neighborhood. So, there is a deli/bodega on Park and Classon? I am thinking of going out there some night this week for dinner and drinks after. Any suggestions as to where I should go?
  • There's a deli/bodega on the corner of Prospect and Grand as well.

There is also Sushi Gen on Washington at St. Marks, pretty close by if you are looking for a place to eat.

You can then walk to Bar Sepia (Underhill and Lincoln) or Ripple (Washington and St. Johns) for a drink.

You also have the Ginger Root Cafe on Washington and Prospect http://brooklyn.about.com/od/restaurants/gr/ginger_root.htm

A short walk to Vanderbilt gets you a host of other food and drink options.

  • I live on the block in question, and I've been running in to a few people (in person) asking the same questions! Maybe you're one of 'em!!!

The block can get a bit noisy, but I don't feel too unsafe... That being said, I don't like when my wife walks around by herself late at night...

Just be smart- don't be a target.
  • Agreed with nybt, and go to Soda on Vanderbilt and Prospect cause that's where it's at.
  • JoshB again: Deli/bodega at Park/Classon has been my savior for three years. Get the honey-turkey hero with Swiss, and some pickles and hot peppers. $3.50. It has staved off many a hangover.

It's delicious, I had it for lunch yesterday! I  Nashal (the name of that particular bodega).
