Book shop on Nostrand...
Is it just me, or does anyone agree a bookshop would be a fantastic idea for this street...Aparently the rents for storefronts on Nostrand are ridiculously cheap...I think it would be great for the community and newcomers alike...Theres one particular stone faced space on eastside of nostrand btw. lincoln and st. johns thats empty and neglected with a busted awning, could be real nice with a little love...see some serious potential...trying to throw around some ideas with people who care about this neighborhood....

that would be great! I LOVE books and would go to nostrand for them. also, I think all 'inner-city' areas need bookstores. I lived in harlem for several years and there weren't very many bookstores there, but people wanted to read -- there were a lot of successful street book-sellers and the libraries had a lot of customers. bookstores are worth the trouble. and people like me love to spend lots at indie bookstores. the rush is worth it.

that stone bldg with the busted awning has serious fire damage on the inside. it used to be the mazon dollar store of the gods, but burned out on the day of the bigass snowstorm back in 2003. what a night, the firetrucks were lined up down the block because all of the hydrants were either frozen or buried under rapidly falling snow.
yeah, a bookstore would be rad though. and that space is goregeous. -

I'm sure people would be willing to invest with you--the next Crown Heights North meeting might be a good place to discuss ideas and locations for the store.
There's a new coffee shop opening up on Kingston and Sterling Place in the spring. -

This is a great idea but I don't think it is economically feasible at this time.
Bookstore is not a viable ecomonic option unless you're independently weathly or the store is in an area where people buy a lot of books. My cousin owns a bookstore in Long Island where he sells quite a number of books, yet he's just bearly meeting his overhead.
Analyse for a minute:
Let say you open a bookstore on Nostrand Avenue and your monthly overhead is $5000. You would have to sell at least 10 books at $17 per day to breakeven.
You might think selling 10 books a day is pretty easy but have you ever visited a neighborhood bookstore and noticed how many customers were in the store?
