Vet?

So I have this cat living with me now. His name is Jimmy Carter and he is remarkably cute, for a cat. But we need to bring him to the vet and all. Any suggestions in the area?

I too have recently adopted two cats myself and am looking for a good vet and also to get them groomed a bit. They smell like a kill shelter.

Here's a thread on vets in the area:

    http://dailyheights.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=204&highlight=cat+vet

Now for some GRATUITOUS KITTIE PORN!
  • I've scheduled with Dr. Glenn Zeitz at the Brooklyn Veterinary Hospital for this weekend. It's a bit of a walk, but I'll try it out. They seemed nice on the phone.
  • If you have access to a car, I'd highly recommend a vet in Williamsburg, who is affiliated with BARC (Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition), a no-kill, progressive animal shelter, and a great place to adopt a cat or dog if you're looking.

The vet is Dr. Elaine Felton, 253 Wythe Ave., 718-388-1172.

    BARC: 718-486-7489, same address.
  • Thanks all.
  • I second the reccomendation for Dr. Silverman's at the Prospect Park Animal Clinic (from the previous thread). He cares for my two kitties and two cats & a dog I often "sit" for. He has always come through in a crisis (the animals I sit for are old and have had more than their share of problems). He's very sensitive, kind & thorough.
  • I love Dr. Silverman and his colleagues {Prospect Park Animal Clinic}. He's been taking excellent care of my two little dogs and my bitchy cat for 7 or 8 years. They accept Muffins neutering certificates if Jimmy C. needs his you-know-whats removed. Miss Ha'Penny, my chihuahua, was just spayed there a few months ago.

One thing: STAY AWAY from the place on Union and 6th. They horribly misdiagnosed my chihuahua Wylie {now deceased}, and gave him the wrong medicine, then screamed at me when I found out and confronted them about it. He had heart disease {common!}, and they said it was kennel cough, in a pampered 10 year old dog. PLEASE don't go there.
  • HOPE VET on atlantic, so good.

also for getting the little ones "fixed", check out www.muffins.org

Prospect Park Animal Clinic... Nice folks and they are very kind and take time to explain everything..

    That place is toxic.

I haul over to Carroll Gardens to Dr Julie Morris.
That was after a terrible experience at Union and Sixth, then an "ehhh" time at Animal Kind on Seventh Ave...where the vets are fine but it's too much of a factory and they suggested an MRI that wasn't really going to do us any good.
All of the above drove us screaming across the Gowanus to Dr Morris of Animal Healing Arts. As you can see from the title, she uses a variety of modalities...I like her cause she's reasonable, takes time, and is as likely to suggest Chinese herbs as western meds.
  • i know people have issues with animal kind on 7th, as do i, but if you have a pet who may require surgery and/or hospitalization, i have come to believe they are the best in brooklyn. they routinely call in 'specialists' when such is necessary and they saved my dog's life more than once with a good diagnosis.

that being said, they often recommend unnecessary and expensive testing, make you wait outrageously before you are seen, and the vets there are not equally talented.

over the years, i have entrusted the care of my german shepherd(s) and cats to drs matyack and stronger at animal kind. i also highly recommend animal medical center on the upper east side.
  • Both of my dogs go to Animal Kind and I HIGHLY recommend it. I would suggest making an appointment with Dr. Matayak. She is hands down the best vet there. She is there Wed-Sat afternoons and evenings. She is so good with my two dogs. We have seen other vet's in that office and they have been horrible (one completely mis-diagnosed my dog). They are expensive but I feel like its worth it for peace of mind!
  • i know i already replied to this post, but hope vet, www.hopevet.com is all women and has a huge rainbow flag and they are give you so many options and what i would call holistic care. prices are very reasonable and they don't ever give you stuff you don't need so they can make $$$. i used to work as a vet tech. and hope vet is amazing.

plus it smells good there. weird, right?
  • I'm a HUGE fan of Hope Vet as well. My dog hates the vet but she loves going to Hope for some reason. They successfully removed a cancer tumor from her so now I'm even more in love with them..

I also agree that the vet on Union and 6th blows. The vet wouldn't even touch my dog because she barked at him. COME ON! Your job is to treat animals. I'm sorry to hear about the chihuahua.
  • I've had mixed results with Brooklyn Animal Hospital on Vanderbuilt. A long time ago, it was wonderful. It think the guy that ran it was Zeitz (dark curly hair). He then moved or sold the business or both. The person who took over for him was a moron who nearly killed my cat.

I took my cat in there once, and was told that he had sprained a muscle in his back. The doctor gave him a steroid shot and sent him home. A few hours later, he was too weak to stand. I brought him to Animal Kind, and they diagnosed him with acute kidney failure. He spent several days in the hospital, and eventually came home. The doctor who treated him was I think named Green - he was in an Apple switch ad.

He did eventually die, but we were able to keep him alive for more than a year.
  • Well, now I'm really keen to make that vet appointment tomorrow due to the fact that I found a cat tooth on my bed this morning and I think it may have come from the adult kitty. Hopefully nothing's really wrong. Now I'm thinking about cat dentures. I'd laugh, but the hangover won't let me.
  • Hey Dave be glad it wasn't one of those dead pigeons, then someone would really be trying to tell you something. 8)
  • 5 stars for Prospect Park Animal Clinic. They were so attentive and very understanding and were not expensive.
