Violent mugging on Prospect Place — Brooklynian

Violent mugging on Prospect Place

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
My roommate was recently mugged on Prospect Place between Vanderbilt and Underhill, closer to Underhill. (Tuesday, January 15th)

The nature of the attack was violent. The assailant punched my roommate in the face (thus making it hard to identify him), threw him to the ground and kicked him in the face. He took his bag, which had his wallet and iPod, and ran off. The bag and some other items were later recovered by people in the neighborhood.

The assailant attacked my roommate from behind, didn't say anything and all of this took place at 5:30pm in the early evening on the supposed "Model Block".

Everyone, please please please be careful and aware of your surroundings no matter what time of day it is.

My roommate was on his cell phone at the time of the attack. I myself usually walk home with my iPod on. Since last week, I've taken my iPod off after I get out of the GAP subway stop and today (even though it was 4pm and the sun was out), I kept looking over my shoulder as I walked home.

Be safe,
Pennysworth

  • Ugh, that's horrible. I hope your roommate is okay. Any mugging is unfortunate and scary, but I *really* hate hearing this was so violent.

I've never walked around this neighborhood with my iPod earbuds in and I try to be really cautious about using my cell. A couple of nights ago I was walking to a friend's place on Underhill and passed three people withint a block and a half who were all bopping along after dark with their earbuds -- obviously, not everyone gets that this isn't the safest thing to do. :(

  • As a recent mugging victim, let me tell you that one of the least important things you can do is post about it on these boards. This isn't a "neighborhood" board beyond arranging happy hours and announcing bar openings.

    Just sayin'.

  • Although I find all muggings unsettling, this one is particularly so, as that is my route home every night...around the same time.

I hope your roommate is okay.

I don't think that's entirely fair. We have dozens of regular posters who live here in the neighborhood and hundreds who post less regularly or lurk. Many of us appreciate knowing about these things, and many of us then in turn spread the word to other neighbors who don't visit the site.

Granted, posting here about crime isn't nearly as helpful as some other things, like reporting crimes to the police, organizing a neighborhood watch or block association, or participating in community council meetings and so on, but to characterize this site as useless for anything but happy hours and bar openings isn't at all accurate.

    You're right.

There's stoop sales and quickest-ways-to-JFK threads, too.

  • Man, pensodyssey, I don't know why you're so sour on this site all of a sudden. I could rattle off several more examples of how Brooklynian.com has indeed been useful to many people, but it sounds like you're not in any mood to hear it anyway and I really don't want to further derail this thread.

If you really want to open up a debate whether the site is useful, let me know. I'm happy to split this off to "Ask Brooklynian" for you.

  • I'm not down on this site at all. I just think people should know what they're getting.

  • So you're saying if you get Robbed and the shit kicked out of you, you shouldn't post this info as a Public service? But feel free to post the next time you're selling old crap off your front stoop. Gotta love this place!

  • The chatter online has made me more aware of the muggings, and it's made me more aware of who's around me - not only the shady-types, but also the targets (there's a lot). Hopefully I haven't freaked anyone out, but lately I've been trying to change my pace slightly when I see someone alone and oblivious to their surroundings, just to keep within shouting distance (100 ft) and hopefully deter a would-be mugger. To the young lady talking loudly on the phone last night while walking down an otherwise deserted Park Place - yeah, the one with two white cats - wise up.

  • Just wanted to chime in here to mention that my wife's school is in the area, and the staff there (nearly all of which do not live in the neighborhood and otherwise would not have access to such local radar) have absolutely appreciated being kept aware of neighborhood-watch matters as reported here, as it affects everything from going to the playground (Underhill) to keeping alert and informed to and from the subway or one's car at the end of the day (knowing which blocks have had recent issues).

So yes, it is actually very helpful that folks share their experiences here, as it does actually help more people than some folks may have considered.

  • pennysworth: Taking off your iPod when you come out of GAP may not be enough. There have been reports of folks getting targeted and tailed out of that particular station for robbery. So be aware. I hate to say it, but my recommendation would be to forgo the iPod altogether on your ride into GAP, to be on the safe side. Sorry to hear about what happened to your roomate, I hope he isn't seriously injured.

pensodyssey: Don't presume to know what this board holds for different people. If it is all happy hours, bars, and stoop sales to you, then that is your own personal problem. Not the boards, and not anyone else's.

  • Yeah...my primary reason for joining this forum was to know about the crime going on in my area. I really appreciate all the people who post about their experiences. Without knowing about these occurences, one can be so oblivious to what's really going on out there.

OP...sorry about your friend. I always thought that part of the block looked shady. I try to avoid walking that way on Prospect. Can't believe it happened so early in the evening.
