HUMANS AGAINST MUSIC
Hippie New Year! Is it 2008 already? Bill C. is out this month taking a CPR class, so welcome back Empresario Kraoky Song. Sing low and win big at Freddy's!

This month HAM celebrates the life and music of Dan Fogelberg with our 3-song tribute "LONGER DAN". You may recall some of his later work from albums such as "The Very Best of Dan Fogelberg" (2001), "Fogelberg's Greatest Hits" (1982), "The Essential Dan Fogelberg" (2003) and "Portrait: The Music of Dan Fogelberg" (1997).

Often confused with other soft-rock greats like Harry Chapin, James Messina, Kenny Loggins, James Taylor, and even sad siren Joni Mitchel, Fogelberg came into his own with songs such as "Leader Of The Band", "Same Old Lang Syne" and signature prom favorite "Longer (Than)".

Daniel Grayling Fogelberg was born on August 13, 1951 in Peoria, Illinois, the younger of two borthers. His father, Lawrence, was a World War II veteran who worked as a band leader for both Woodruff 1945-1955 and Pekin 1956-1976 High Schools and Bradley University. His mother, Margaret, was a classically-trained pianist from Scotland. As an avid downhill skierm outdoorsman, and sailor, nature served to inspire his music. He built a full recording studio in Maine known as "Mountain Bird Studio" in the late 80's where he recorded his last two albums "River Of Souls" (1993) and "No Resemblance Whatsoever" (1995).

After years of coping with advanced prostate cancer, Fogelberg passed away last December 2007. Musical Colleague Joni Mitchel was quoted as saying "Dan was a poet and he didn't even realize it".

  • Subject: Other Great Station Wagon Classics

You learn a lot about lyrics at HAM. For example, all these years I though that song by the band Kansas was called "Dustin Nguyen" (all we are is Dustin Nguyen...). This Wednesday evening (if you're over 37) rediscover those lost Station Wagon Classics and their deeply moving lyrics:

"Show Me The Way" in the style of Peter Frampton

"Baby I Love Your Way" in the style of Peter Frampton

"I'm In You" in the style of Peter Frampton

"If You Could Read My Mind" in the style of Gordon Lighfoot

"The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" in the style of Gordon Lighfoot

"Sundown" in the style of Gordon Lighfoot

"Rhinestone Cowboy" in the style of Glen Campbell

"Thank God I'm a Country Boy" in the style of John Denver

"Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me" in the style of Mac Davis

"If You Love Me (Let Me Know)" in the style of Olivia Newton John

"Lookin' For Love" in the style of Johny Lee

"Ruby (Don't Take Your Love)" in the style of Kenny Rogers

"Mama Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up" in the style of Willie Nelson

"Ode To Bill Joe" Bobby Gentry

"The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" in the style of Charlie Pride

"Take this Job and Shove It" in the style of Johnny Paycheck

"Midnight Train To Georgia" in the style of Gladys Night & The Pips

"Dust In The Wind"in the style of Kansas

"In Dreams (Candy Colored Clown)" in the style of Roy Orbison

"We Just Disagree"in the style of Dave Mason

  • Subject: HAMmy Thanks

It is true. Dan is no longer with us, but thank you Koko for keeping Dan's memory alive with that "Same Old Lang Syne" and other station wagon favorites. Humans Against Music gives a New Year shout-out a few hammy people. A big-ass thanks to our host Empresario Kraoky Song.

To our HAM winner Mz. Spell, your American Sign Language version of "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" brought the house down, rockin'! Troy our OC's denizen and softball MVP, enjoy the Jack Daniels BBQ sauce (the sauce brush is not for high lights). Sha la la la la la la la la la la, oh-la-ti-da. All the ladies (and a guy from Park Slope) want to be your "Brown Eyed Girl". "Peter and Gavin", thanks for all the duets. You need better karaoke names, never the less enjoy the King Pin DVD.

    But there's so much more...

Bi-polar Bear, you held us captive with your "Folsom Prison Blues". H-bomb, everyone wants to be your "Teacher's Pet". Steve D., who knew the "Unicorn Song" had blue lyrics. That Guy was a "Runaway Train". The hairy harmonious humor of funny man Pat Oshea, "Viva Las Vegas"! Fame Lady, sorry I forgot you name, but... "FAME"! Sinatra Man, You in fact did "Fly Me To The Moon" (the song is actually called "In Other Words"). Muffin Top, it's a New Year, you can "Turn Back Time" and qualify for a new ham, even though you somehow lost the last two. Hmmmm. HAM has a new favorite Other White Guy With The Fro, you left on that "Midnight Train To Georgia", but we hope you come back next month. If there's anyone we missed HAM extends a warm thank you.

In February, the Opera Divas from Opera on Tap might guest host HAM for Leap Year/Valetines Day Equinox. This night will prove to be very very different, but we'll have to wait and see. See you next time, Elvis has left the building!
