Block associations

Our block of Underhill is looking to start up a block association. Im good at follow up but I am not good at starting it up. I was wondering if there is anyone out there who belongs to one (or is an officer for their block assoc.) can answer a few questions for me such as

How did you start yours up? How should a typical meeting be conducted, etc. Do we need to register our association and if so is it with the precinct or with the community board.

I would be willing to spring for a brunch, lunch or dinner if I could "pick your brain".

  • I attend our block association meetings but not an officer or anything. I'd suggest that you reach out to the community board, tell them what you are trying to do and ask them which are the most active block associations in the area. You can then reach out to the folks who run them for some assistance.

As for how the meetings are run, our block association usually meets 5-6 times a year at someone's house on the block. Meetings are a couple of hours and in the past they have tried to invite folks from the precinct, the local politicians, etc to talk about issues of importance to us. They also raise money for the block parties, etc. We do have dues (I think its $25 for homeowners and $10 if you rent on the block), which are paid annually. Our block association president is very active in the community and is usually in attendance at the precinct council and community board meetings.

    Hope that helps...
