Same Old Story...But Still--Mugging on Eastern Parkway

At 6' 3'' 200 lbs, I'd thought for a long time that I'd be the last target of a mugging, but it happened the other night. Eastern Parkway, midway b/t Classon and Franklin, about 6.30 at night. I'd long ago stopped wearing the ipod at night, but I was still being dumb about the cell phone. I was tackled from behind, cell phone went flying, two guys, one front, one back. I didn't get hurt, just loss some cash, the phone (which they're still using), and a chunk of my dignity.

The police, who, overall, were great, drove me around for a couple hours, pointing out all the people who were doing the same thing as me--cell phones, ipods, prime targets. So be careful. They said they're going after white males with greater frequency. But everyone should keep their eyes open.

  • Son of a bitch!

There are cops like ALL OVER there now every time I walk through. WTF is going on to have blatant crap like this at 6:30pm. I'm pretty conscious of what is going on around, and no iPod, cell, etc., but I doubt I would think twice about taking a call there at 6:30pm before reading this post. So, well, thanks for the heads up at least. And DAMN!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, glad you are OK.

For reals! I wish Daylight Savings Time were year-round; I hate feeling nervous walking home from the train on my way back from work at such an early hour.

Pat G, I'm glad you weren't hurt, at least.

  • Can you post a description of the assailants, so we know who to avoid? Weren't there other people around at such an early hour? Did anyone try to help you? So sorry you had to go through this, it is becoming all too common...

  • The assailants were two black males, ages 18-22. The guy I got the best look at was around 5-9, 5-10. The guy behind me was about the same height as me. It's winter, so they had parkas on, hoods up, no masks or anything like that.

It all happened so fast, but I was really struck by how perfectly they timed it. As I stood on the sidewalk, pissed as hell, watching them run and then walk away, stealing glances over their shoulders, I realized that there wasn't anyone within 100 yards either way. Naturally, I've been looking now and noticed that even at that time there are moments and places where you can have that big a gap. And maybe I wouldn't see anything a hundred or so yards up unless I was looking. Which I will be now.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts.

6:30 PM? WTF indeed! The NYPD better step it up and put an end to this crap.

Your phone service can track every call in and out. Even if they deleted it from the history on the phone itself, it shows at the company end.
Armchair warrior was totally right. Back track from who these people called. Although if they are all cell phones they're calling they may not be able to find the locatation of those phones but it's worth a try. Maybe they can see what towers they were being hooked up to just to know what area of the city the theives are from.
I'm sure you called the company to discontinue service if you already know the phone is being used.
I'm sorry this happened to you, but glad you're OK.

  • OP, sorry. I too got pummled a few weeks ago. Just for kicks. I didn't even bother to look at how many posts you've posted, etc, but I have to say that the neighborhood you're in is pretty good. The 77th (can't believe I'm writing this) is doing all they can. You just have to choke shit up to dumb luck. If you have friends who have lived in BK since they were little, they'd probably be amazed it hadn't happened before now.

Cestlavie! You've been fucked over in some way here. But, it's done and you're still walking, breathing and living out here. That is a good thing. Just keep your chin up and don't ask too many questions about yourself. Especially, why and where and when it happened.

Dumb luck, that's all. Not the norm.

  • That's really good advice, LeeHo. And I know you were rightfully feeling pretty angry and shook-up right after what happened to you (as well you should have) -- glad you're not letting it eat away at you.

  • Just out of curiosity, where you coming home from the subway? The MO has been to follow home from the subway station until an opportune moment arrives. This seems to be mostly people coming from GAP but that doesn't mean that the perps won't move from station to station.

  • That sucks and it freaks me out too. btw, was it a schmancy phone?

  • Trying to remember the questions:

I wasn't coming from the subway. Coming from around the corner, near the Lincoln Deli.

It was my favorite kind of phone--free from Verizon.

And yes, that's why the phone is still on, to track calls. They've even been sending text messages. Maybe I'm crazy, but I hope the cops can track these guys down and I get a chance to see a line up. that will be a good day.

And to the guy who said it was bad luck, I totally agree. I will keep my chin up. I like living over here. I don't like my new mode of walking, which involves discreet looks over the shoulder, but that's what I'm left with. There are many great people in this neighborhood, so I'm trying to keep positive about it all.

Out of curiosity. Can the police read the texts through the company in any way? I wonder if there was a way to use the info the jerks are using in their messages to each other to set up a meeting as if they were friends of the people they've been texting. Using the friends names as a kind of reference. I'm going to go out on a limb with this, but I would think if they steal, the probably deal as well, so maybe they could try to hook up and nab them then.
    Just a thought.

When cases like this go to trial what's the normal outcome, probation, incarceration.
