Another mugging on Underhill
To add to the rash of muggings in the neighborhood I just found out a friend of a friend was mugged on Underhill a few days ago. It was around 5:30 or 6 and she was walking down Underhill near Park Place and someone came from behind her and grabbed her. He then told her that she was to give her bag to his mugging associates. She was able to convince them just to take her money, as she had a sentimental attachment to her bag, but either way it really shook her up.
How do we get more cops in the area? There seems to be a mugging a day if not more.

Well, there does seem to be a trend here:
-people on phones and/or with headphones;
-early evening/post typical work day;
-ambush-style. -

Hey Lulu's Momma: Just to clarify, was your friend on phone/with iPod on? -

too bad we can't do the old brooklyn way of deterring people from coming in and mugging people in some nabes. walk around with dozens of guys looking for those muggers, usually armed with something. and if muggers are found beaten first.

Local residents need to work together on this. We need to identify each other and walk together in groups. We need to commit in interceding whenever we see one another in distress. Most importantly we should carry pepper spray and other personal security devices and not hesitate to use them with great enthusiasm.

What ever happened to the Guardian Angels? I've seen a few of the guys on the Shuttle awhile back.

Would be cool if we could call them in to help. -
Now we're bringing back the Guardian Angels? Bernie Goetz won't be far behind huh? That's why I posted that --- now ridiculously closed because of whiners --- thread about buying a gun. You want to help the community? Stop fear mongering. There's something to be said for providing information and "Beware" and all that. But every other post is about crime. It's become hysteria at this point. Someone is gonna buy a gun or carry a knife with them and kill someone on the street or more likely get themselves killed. Quickest way to turn a nice community into a paranoid cesspool. There's constructive ways to combat this stuff. Mostly things that aren't happening on this board.
-
Even the main page has some unknown quote from an unknown person where the end result is the cops saying "Move out of the neighborhood" --- huh? That's responsible? That's different than a gun thread? Ridiculous.

If we want a community we should build a community. We should build a community that exists beyond the comfortable individualized veil of group solidarity in online message boards but individual exposure in the real world. I would like to be a member of a community that realistically stands up for itself. There are really simple and effective measures that can be taken to empower us against these bullies. Introduce yourselves to your neighbors when you see them on the street. Find out a little bit about them as you walk down the street TOGETHER. If you see someone talking on the phone or with ear buds in STOP THEM and inform them of what has been going on and walk together. If you're at home during the times these attacks have been happening get outside with a buddy and go for a walk. Look out for your neighbors. Go get some fresh air and just serve the purpose of being out there and ready to help. I promise you that if we act together the need to get involved in a confrontation will diminish greatly. However if you find yourself engaged than respond and respond with overwhelming force. USE A WHISTLE to call out for help, dominate your assailant and detain them until help arrives. Band together to deter attacks, but band together even more strongly to send a message that it is just not worth attacking in this neighborhood anymore.
You are welcome to attack these views but personally I want to know my neighbors. I want them to know that I've got their back. I want to know that they have mine. I know it's cool to be independent and seemingly in control but I think we all understand that in many things in life this just does not really work and the control you think you have is fleeting at best.
Get to know each other on the street. Build a community. -

Sweetie seems like you are the only one guilty of this - didn't you post the Where can I get a gun thread? This will not make me or anyone I know buy a gun but it will make us a little more aware of our surroundings and look out for our neighbors.Innocent X wrote: Quickest way to turn a nice community into a paranoid cesspool. Do you know all the posters personally - there are more rather than less people on this board who get involved much further than talking smack on a board.
If it wasn't for this board I wouldn't know half the stuff happening and since I have a son who has to walk back and forth to school I am grateful that people post it here. -

Do what was done in Boro Park, the community set up a volunteer group who patrolled their community in cars or vans with video cameras , cell phones and walkie talkies.
If there was a crime in progress they would contact the Police and video the criminals, it worked, why not give it a try. -

I just think this becomes more dangerous than the danger we're talking about. Things can be done but violence to meet violence isn't a great solution. It's a solution, but again, not a great one. Again, I just think all this hysteria is going to lead to someone fighting back or carrying their own weapon and then we're gonna have postings about deaths rather than muggings. -

It's called satire. Look it up. -

Dont know what DAB means but sweetie was meant as an endearment and as far as satire I guess you can give it but cant take it -
My thread, satire. Your post, not. So I don't really get the dish it/take it thing.

Thank you daver
Innocent X - since I dont agree with you that gives you a right to call me a bitch - no where in my post did I ever call you a derrogatory name or dis you [*redacted so as not to offend anyone this was not directed at*]
Sorry mods and the rest of the posters -
I have no idea what daver is talking about actually.
But I will say that "Sweetie" is a completely condescending term to apply to someone. You girlies like to throw that around and act like it's harmless but I know the intent. So don't play so innocent. -

And if you knew me instead of assuming you do, you would know that I use the word "sweetie", "honey" and "baby" as endearing terms. -
Am I the only one that sees the irony of this post? The "let's walk together, you DAB" stuff is amusing at best. maybe the best way to make the neighborhood feel more neighborly is to just stop being here. stop reading. stop posting. stop lambasting. stop whining. log off. and try smiling to the people that you pass on the street. saying hello. helping each other. acknowledging each other.
while i think this board started with good intentions and i keep hoping to see glimmers of those intentions still, mostly this board is a way for people to presume pseudo-anonymity and say the things they would never say to someones face, only to have everyone respond with vitriol. and in the end it makes our real life neighborhood far less neighborly because everyone assumes that the people they pass on the streets are the ones lambasting them.
i gotta tell you, i like the neighborhood more when i am not reading here. sure i like to be informed, but i'd take ignorance and friendliness any day of the week over the "be my neighbor bitch" tone of this entire board now.
this is why i took my last hiatus. i made the mistake of coming back. so tell me what i already know... that i should leave... and carry on with your bickering. and maybe one day this board will either get shut off and people will have to be nice to each other again, or the whole neighborhood will erupt. -
