  • Despite being a big guy with no iPod, phone or other targeted doo-dads, I've pretty much stopped getting off at GAP, opting for Eastern Parkway instead...the walk down Washington and then over is certainly a heck of a lot less cute, but at least there is traffic, pedestrians and stores to dive into should the need arise.

Not that the MugMap is 100% comprehensive, but there does seem to be a sort of DMZ along the Wash Ave corridor...
  • Subject: Mugged

It i very strange that suddenly everyone is getting mugged in the hood nowadays?? Are newbies easy picking for poor unemployed young men out there??? I am 30 and have lived in the hood for almost my whole life, i have walked home pissed drunk at all hours of the night and i have never been mugged. Maybe i am lucky, but then again it seems that people need to be careful when walking home, wait till you get home to make that important phone call that you can{t wait to ansewr, wait till you get home to put on your stereo and listen to you fav music, walk around aware of your surroundings, carry your wallet n your pront pocket, who walks around with their wllets in the shoulder bg, anyhow be safe
  • I've lived in the neighborhood for four years, and unless I'm getting senile, my first unpleasantly dangerous-feeling experience in the neighborhood was... last night. So even though I'm trying to set aside my own human tendency to put too much weight on local and recent events, it does kind of feel like something is different, to me.
  • As pathetic as it sounds it is probably a good idea to carry a little extra muggers money with you at all times. My wife was mugged on on stoop on Sterling years ago and she had no money in her purse at the time. The dude took the time to look through her wallet after she handed it over and when he didnt find any cash he confronted her about. The guy eventually left with the wallet but the whole ordeal was prolonged and escalated as a result of her being flat broke. not fun.
  • I'm definitely walking and acting more aggressively in the nabe. I never listen to my ipod on the train home at night and talk on the phone rarely. I also take a cab home at a moments notice from places I wouldn't have taken a cab from a year ago. I definitely don't blame victims, but I see a lot of potential victims these days. folks, take the boards seriously - stop listening to your ipod, pay attention to your surroundings, and walk with purpose!
  • I have a crazy plan, but it just might work. I was walking to the Q in Union Square the other day and a young Orthodox Jewish boy handed me a dollar bill. Sweet! But it was actually an advertisement for a synagogue printed in the shape and color of a onesky. I stuffed it in my coat pocket and soldiered on home.

Later, I got off the Shuttle at Park Pl. and was walking towards the apartment daydreaming about muggings. (It's a favorite pasttime). Putting two and two together, I realized that I could easily hand a mugger a wad of funny money. I might be the recipient of a sucker punch to the face, but at least they won't get any of my cold, hard cash. Plus, I ran track in college so by time they unfolded the money to see a Rabbi's face instead of Andrew Jackson, I would be home phoning the police. Check and mate.

For legal purposes, I would definitely print "Not legal tender" on the bills. I would also carry an ipod made from an empty juicebox and shoelaces.
  • if you stay at a bar until 4am and take the train or walk home, no one's around...not even muggers. just sayin.

There are definitely people around my neighborhood at 4am. FWIW. St. Johns, Nostrand, and then down Eastern. It isn't crowded, but it isn't deserted either.
