Apartment Security Suggestions

Okay, so I am interested to see what type of security measures other residents in the neighborhood take in their apartments.

Our apartment does not have metal window security guards. Has anybody had experience with the security film that you can place on a window? I think it’s similar to the material that has been applied to many of the buildings in the city, post 9/11.

So far, I have just found this website: http://www.theglassprotector.com/

If anybody has any other suggestions, please feel free to share them.
Thank you.

  • Renter's insurance or homeowner's insurance!!! Definitely worth it for the peace of mind. And if you have bars/gates/alarms or other security measures, it lowers the cost of the insurance.
  • yeah renter's insurance is definitely a lot easier than you might think. it can be like $10/month for way more coverage than your stuff is probably worth.
  • If you're going to put security gates on your windows, make sure they're FDNY approved.

  • Does anyone have renters' insurance recommendations? Anyone had good (or bad) experiences with certain providers?

I got my renter's insurance from Allstate when I was renting. Now I have homeowner's insurance, which I got from the Allstate office on Vanderbilt. I've had no problems with them, although I've never had to make a claim, which would obviously be the real test.

    Edited for typo.
  • i got mine through allstate. try sally yi (sallyyi [at] allstate [dot] com) or 718.428.4001. her biz card, i just noticed, says she speaks korean too, if yer into that kinda thing.

*edit* oh and don't try saying "bobby brummel recommended you!" because that's not actually my name.

I used to have StateFarm for renters insurance. It ran me less than $200 a YEAR! SOOOO worth it. I had an old gf who's parents worked for Allstate and said you could not IMAGINE the number of people who called in a claim but had no insurance (other than car, so for some reason they thought their home was covered too) and were just screwed. For the low cost, it's a no-brainer.

Now I think we have USAA. I don't think we had a reason for switching other than my girlfriend has an account with them and she just really likes them.
I could recommend either based on cost. Luckily I've yet to file any claims.
