missing black cat? or new alley cat?
Like some of you, the back of my building shares a 'backyard' with the rear of handful Washington Ave, St. Johns and Sterling Pl. buildings. The usual gang of alley cats is a staple of our 'yard', but the last few days there's been more cat-moaning and growling than is usual. This morning the moaning continued, and I saw this cat being intimidated by an alley-cat regular. Anyone recognize him from the gang? Or is he perhaps someone's recently missing or rejected kitty?

the pretty white one is in heat and there are 3 big toms (like that guy above) who have been trying to move in on her.
btw, the fluffy long haired black & white cat has been getting some action on that cushion just below your deck! -

you've got the new gang and the lovely lady, what about the old gang that got run out?
(i miss seeing them out there...) -

Not to ruin everyone's fun here, but can we at least remember that a feral animal's life is no picnic. They often meet tragic ends and what seems like entertainment for you all is actually a perpetually difficult life being played out in front of you.
Please don't write back and tell me you feed them and they sleep in the basement of your building- fact is, domesticated animals living outside of domesticity have it hard. Real hard.
BTW- the Puppy Bowl is in its final quarter....good game. -
one shouldn't mistake the light heartedness of this thread for insensitivity. I feel for the critters, truly, and wish I could take them in. Since I can't, I simply enjoy their company and the diversity and intrigue they add to my own domesticity.

Yea, no I realize it, I do. I guess after seeing the pics of the little red dog, coming home from a country where there are homeless animals everywhere (Thailand), and looking at these photos above, I'm a little touchy.
I just don't really see the above photos as entertaining- they just look really sad to me. -
the photos above aren't entertaining --- but these are the cats that izisharp and i see everyday outside between the buildings. we know their personalities to a certain extent. so, i'm glad someone else has their eye on them ---- for whatever that is worth (not much, i know).
the reality of the situation is that the only place i would be able to access for TNR would not be safe for me and possibly a really bad situation for the cats --- i hope to figure something out in the future, perhaps if anyone else sees these cats in their backyard who safe access we can help figure something out. -

This one looks like a toughie. Is he the leader of the gang?

Thanks for sharing about your feral cats. There are a lot in our hood. It may be a bit sad to know the cats are outdoors all the time, but once a cat is old enough and feral enough, it would be far worse to attempt to keep him inside. The best thing to do is make sure they are all fixed (no more kitties!) and they have some kind of shelter for the cold days.

Did you know that Hemmingway left his estate to the feral cats that live on it? He even had a water fountain made just for the cats to drink from. I wish I was a feral cat in Key West! -
Which side of Washington are you talking about? If it's east and you really want to trap them, have you thought about asking the owner of the party space next to Ripple for access to his backyard? I see a bunch of cats in that yard often. I'm not sure if they're the ones in these pics since I don't have a close enough view, but some are definitely in heat from the sounds of it.

West side of Washington. So yes, these are Prospect Heights cats. -

Tell me about it! I keep trying that whole "say cheese" bit, but the cats, feral as they are, have an image and a rep to maintain. They never smile on camera. -

Just curious, why is it unsafe? Is the building management uncooperative?
I'd totally help you tnr them, btw, but unfortunately I'm 7 months pregnant and completely useless. :? -

Looks like there are going to be a lot of babies there in the spring if these guys don't get neutered. There are numerous people in the neighborhood that are certified to do TNR and have access to free spay/neuter slots. If you are interested in doing TNR in this area then please PM me. I can talk to you about how to get started doing something like this. You will feel much better seeing the cats out there after they are all fixed. If it looks like a sad situation now, it will look even sadder when there are tiny little kittens running around.

I guess I owe it to the kitties to at least consider this TNR effort. I'll start with some research.
Meanwhile, here's another cat from the block. That makes 7 featured in this thread, the same number of cast members on....."this is a true story.... (true story!).....of seven stray cats....
..left to live in an alley....to find out what happens....

Subject: feral cats
Talk about a hard knock life. You're right....the white cat does have such sad eyes. I've done TNR and it makes a huge difference in their lives. And they are vaccinated and tested at that time, which makes them safer for awhile as well all the other animals they may encounter.
Good luck. -

Omg! I want to take them all in and give them a good life! Look at the fluffball in the last pic

Subject: TNR...while its only 9....
So there are 9 now and if half are female, say 4 to be fair, the two calicos definately are - and they have 4 kittens each in their next heat exactly how many will that make by the summer?
Umm thats 16 kittens plus the 9 so that's 25 cats you will have if you dont TNR soon! I have experience trapping and have done a lot in my neighborhood so I can help on weekends with trappings.
There's a free workshop coming up too on 3/1 to teach how to TNR if anyone is interested but this will work best if those living in the community can get involved. You can get the skills you need to save these guys lives, reduce the future population of 25+ thats you'll have by summer without TNR and rescue out any friendly kitties.
Neutering reduces odor and noise two main complaints and will provide the kitties with healthier lives.
Anyone interested in the workshop should contact Slope Street Cats, here's a website where you can find their info.

I hope there are a few people out there who have enough time and heart to help these guys out, I know it requires a time commitment but it only takes a few people working together a few hours a week to do this right.
Anyway that's my piece, anyone else.....
