Crime down? — Brooklynian

Crime down?

prospectus
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Crime getting better? Or have the muggers just been staying home, afraid of catching cold in chilly late January? Or is it the new cops?

Here are the latest police numbers on robberies/muggings for us (the 77th Precinct which includes most of Crown Heights and Prospect Height) and them (the 78th Precinct, which covers Park Slope).

The numbers for us are the lowest since early November.

These numbers come from the police. You can see the latest at:

But the cops don't keep an archive. You can see statistics going back a few months at:

  • But if you look at the robberies for the same week in 2007 for the 77...it's exactly the same. The frequencies of robberies has decreased from a month or so ago but they also went down this week last year.

True — some of this is probably a seasonal thing. Fewer people are out when it's colder.

But last year was a lot colder than this year, especially last week. It didn't feel at all like January/February. Fun fact: The high temperature on Friday, February 1, 2008 was 56F, says Weather Underground.

Also, even if the drop is seasonal, it's nice to be back where we were last year, before bashing people with iPods became a thing…

Clearly, the mugging map is starting to pay off.

... when it's cold outside the kiddies would rather play with the loot they swiped last time around. But don't worry, as the temperatures rise, so will they.
  • Well, on one hand Parade Rest's addition is discouraging, but on the other hand I can't help but think that the new cops are making an impact. The presence is so overwhelming, that my thought is that even though the numbers are matching 2007, the difference is that the current numbers would be much HIGHER and worse without the new cops.

Well, that's my theory at least. Go cops. Boo robbers.
  • Subject: Fresh from Comstat

Another week's robbery numbers. Once again, we are down from the highs of December. And once again we are exactly the same as last year:

    Crown Height and Prospect Heights
    (77th Precinct)
    Week 2/4 - 2/10, 2008: 6
    Week 2/4 - 2/10, 2007: 6
    percentage change: 0%

    28 Days that ended 2/10, 2008: 25
    28 Days that ended 2/10, 2007: 25
    percentage change: 0%

I still think it's nice to be where we were before the boom in iPod-related bashings. To compare, in nice, boring Park Slope, with no new cops, robberies are still rising year over year:

    Park Slope (78th Precinct)
    Week 2/4 - 2/10, 2008: 2
    Week 2/4 - 2/10, 2007: 1
    Park Slope percentage change: +100%

    28 Days that ended 2/10, 2008: 10
    28 Days that ended 2/10, 2007: 8
    Park Slope percentage change: +25%
