mugging just now — Brooklynian

mugging just now

it keeps happening...

i heard shouting (thought it was just the regular shouting that comes from washington ave side of things) but realized it was a guy saying "fuck you! give me my bag back" or something to that effect. he said he got punched in the face.

a few people ran and helped. the last thing i definitely heard him clearly say to the guy who witnessed this from across the street was "THANKS FOR YOUR HELP MOTHERFUCKER".... but what is one to do other than call 911 immediately after witnessing this? more people will just get hurt being heros methinks.

so yep. another mugging. this time right under my window at 800

the cops showed up surprisingly fast. seemed to arrive around 5 minutes after the initial calls.

whats scary to me is that we're not even in the warm months yet...

  • Where did this happen?

My husband was just assaulted on Sterling betw Washington & Underhill about a half hour ago. Not mugged, just punched to the ground--for no reason whatsoever--by one kid of a group of about 10 little motherfuckers.

He reported it to the cops, but he didn't see much because of the cowardly way he was attacked. So if anybody saw anything, let me (or the cops) know.

i'm so sorry to hear this. i truly hope that your husband wasnt too badly hurt? i am on prospect between washington and underhill. happened closer to underhill. makes me wonder if it's the same group of kids, although this didn't seem like a crowd, as much as it seemed like one guy took another guys bag. but this happened right around 8pm on the dot. same time as your husbands incident?
  • It is the beginning of the February break for schools. Maybe they are bored already?

I hope no one was hurt. Good luck getting info.
  • Ugh...we walked by while your husband was speaking to the police and thought we heard him say that the kid punched him in the head (?)
    I'm so sorry that happened.
He seemed like he was ok? I hope so.
    :(
  • Subject: 3 teens, 1 guy 2 girls

The guy who was mugged is ok. He was punched in the face and kicked to the ground. I think they just took his phone; he didn't give the bag.

My husband and I went to help, too late. The muggers were 3 teens (15-16), 1 guy and 2 girls. The only description I heard was that 1 of the girls had intricately braided hair and they were all wearing hoods.

Crazy that there were people on the street. A couple, who were giving descriptions to the police, saw it too. Luckily, it will be cold again tomorrow...
  • Subject: I am the guy

I am fine, a little banged up and bruised, but fine.

It's the same style of attack I've read about: punched in the head from behind, pushed down, punched and kicked.

They seemed to only want my iPhone, but then went after my laptop which I wouldn't give up as easily. This is what resulted in the brunt of my attack.

The police were, as usual, unhelpful, but nice.

My wife thinks I should stop talking on my phone on the street. She's probably right.

I did yell "THANKS FOR YOUR HELP MOTHERFUCKER" at the guy standing on the other side of the street that watched the attack and then walked off. Give me a break. If I saw someone getting mugged, I'd call the cops, scream at the attackers, something.
  • I would yell that too! I am so sorry that happened to you. I narrowly escaped being mugged right near there a few months ago.

I heard yelling on the street but there is always yelling on this street. Sounded like a argument, I didn't hear "help" or anything similar. Finally, I did hear the "Are you just going to watch" part. Sorry, we could help.
  • Subject: Re: I am the guy

thank god you're okay. like vagabond said... there is ALWAYS yelling on this street, so it wasn't until i heard you more clearly, that i realized it must be a mugging and not the usual domestic disturbance that spills over.

i also didn't mean to sound insensitive if i came across that way when referring to the other guy... from where i was in my apartment, he looked just as startled and i think walked off because he was probably scared. everyone reacts differently in those situations...

i too, called 911. and noticed people across the way peeking out of their windows. i felt helpless, and all i could do was call. thank you for replying to let us know that you're okay.

out of curiousity, did this happen after you walked past the tall wood wall? i fucking HATE HATE HATE that wall. ever since they threw it up, i knew it was bad news. its just asking for muggings....

for everyone who lives on this block, and has visitors, please make a point to walk on the other side of the street and tell people coming to see you to do the same thing. that wall just makes for an easy target, especially for those with ipods or on phones. its a total blindspot for anyone walking, and for someone to hide behind.

I guess spring break isn't what it
    use to be.
  • Heh. The funny part is I got mugged in that exact same spot in the exact same way 7 years ago while doing the exact same thing: right at the end of that funny house, 3 teenage hooligans attacked me from behind, while talking on my phone.

It's disheartening to me that this street seems to be getting more dangerous as the neighborhood comes up. I feel so comfortable here that I forget to keep my guard up.

I guess I'm not talking on my phone on the street anymore.

What made them unhelpful? The officers responded quickly, put you in the car to look for the suspects and then took down all of your information for the report. That's about where it ends. Unless you spotted the perps on the street again there is nothing more to be done at that time.

Unfortunately the "robbery unit" wasn't immediately available but they will be contacting you and asking you to come in to look at pictures.

This isn't spring break, this week is midwinter recess. You can look forward to spring break still in April.
  • The police were "helpful," but it's not like anything will come of it. A better word would have been "ineffective."
  • Also, the "robbery unit"...

Last time I got mug, they showed up at my door 2 days later and tried to get me to finger some kid even though I kept telling them I didn't see the guy's face (hoodie and bandana). They were very persistent, and I finally just asked them to leave.
  • Man hearing about this stuff makes me SO MAD!!!! I cant wait to see the post where someone says "so these bastards tried to mug me but I karate chopped them and they were all arrested..." or something.

Good to hear no one has been seriously hurt.

I do want to know, even though you were on your phone, could you hear them coming up on you (like the pitter-patter of their little douchebag feets)?

EDIT: dont forgot to post you assalts on the map!
  • Sometimes the best thing a spectator can do, is be a good witness. Everyone reacts differently in these type of situations and despite the recent rash of Mugging threads, witnessing people getting Robbed in the street, is not an everyday occurence. So cursing out someone who may have called 911 for you, probably wasn't the neighborly thing to do. I also remember a good samaritan getting stabbed to death last month while trying to intervene in a Robbery.
  • about the "robbery unit"...

they are awesome. when i got mugged they tied it to a pattern, came over to my place a few times, did a line up and ultimately arrested the guy. i also had a really good interaction with the 77 as well. even if these 2 groups hadnt managed to find the guy, I'd still have known in my heart that they did everything above and beyond for me and for the other people who had gone through the same thing and that I had the pleasure of meeting over a line up.

sorry to hear you got mugged, but have some faith that the system does work sometimes and that the people who are there to help may just be trying to help by doing the best job they can. and in my case, they did it well.
  • That is so maddening, stupid fucking dumbass kids. Same thing happened to me last summer.

Glad to hear you're OK for the most part. Taser anyone?

i think this is even better:

what could be more embarrassing than puking while you are trying to rob someone.

  • Subject: Great work

We had a mugging in the 15th st ,PPw station of the F Line. The dirtbag mugged and robbed a young woman and escaped up the 16th Street exit.

Now here is where it gets good, the idiot dropped her tote bag and pocketbook in the garbage pail in the back of the building he lives in.

The next morning the super and maintenance man found them and called the 72nd Pct., who responded immediately.

They contacted the victim had her come to the Pct. where she picked out the mugger from the mug shots.

A week went by and it appeared as if nothing was going to happen. Then last Thursday three officers showed up [Two of them looked like people you would not want to meet in a dark alley] they waited in the hallway for 6 hours till he came home , arrested and cuffed him and he hasn't been seen since.

They did a great job and the tenants are very grateful, as this punk was a nickel and dime heroin dealer who would take his 4 year old son with him on drug runs.

Naw, due to overcrowding he had to settle for Rikers.

I guess thats the natural progression.

    February break.
    Spring break
    Prison break
  • Your wife's correct - walking around after dark while yammering into your expensive cellphone is not smart. Random violence is stupid and awful, but you need to take it into consideration - this is not the UWS. Glad you're ok.

I would bet money that these are the same kids who threw a bottle and me and my husband a few weeks ago. Can't wait til I hear they've gotten busted.

I keep expecting something like this to happen - I think that it's going to take one seriously injured mugger to make other would-be thieves reconsider that job at MickeyD's. You know damn well that that type of news will travel like wild-fire through their ranks.

sadly, the suckerpunch method doesn't allow for much of that, even from the trained pugilists among us

a friend of mine got attacked by teens last month, landed a punch (and some kicks as he was being kicked on the ground) Someone called the cops, and within five minutes they found two of the kids, out of breath and bloody a few blocks away.
Result thus far: grand jury indictment, felony assault and attempted robbery

    So call 911 FAST!

welcome to the board, crayolalettuce - sorry we had to meet this way, and glad you are okay (and kept your laptop)

Seems the taser is illegal in NY state...even that stylish leopard skin model!
  • The taser may not be legal, but neither is mugging. What is your mugger going to do: Report that they were mugging you and you tased them to the cops?

Two wrongs don't make a right, but as I read someone say on one of these boards, maybe if the mugger tells his mugger buddies that he got tased, the other muggers won't be so eager to get their mug on.
