dog fighting

There's certainly plenty of breeding going on in the area, that much is clear. As to the fighting, I doubt that anyone could comment reliably on it. Or if they could, I doubt they'd be willing.
-
there is definitely a lot of breeding going on...i've been "solicited" several times.
but yea, ask your friend where the fights are. i'm curious. -
My neighbors mentioned a few main avenues--Grand, Washington, Classon-- (not sure about cross streets,) where they'd seen this. They also said the police were not very quick to do anything about it.

I live very close to the areas that you're talking about - again, there are plenty people breeding, but I've never seen or heard a dogfight in the area. Are your friends/neighbors claiming to have witnessed one firsthand? And out of curiosity, what's your interest - you seem intentionally vague. -
I once saw a guy dragging his dog my his leash while the dog SCREAMED. It was horrifying. I called 911 and was surprised by the fast response of the police. They even called me back to see what direction the guy was headed.
That dog haunts me. -
yes, they claimed to have witnessed one first-hand-- i have not-- and my interest would be in reporting any confirmed cases of animal abuse.

I've seen things like that too. . . it's horrible!

Right on... but I'd be harassing them if they made these claims. In the years of perusing these boards, there have been many reports of dogs barking, whining, being left out in the cold, etc. in this area, but not one mention of hearing dogs actually fighting. Your friends/neighbors seem to be the best lead available. -
Well, I'm trying my best to get more information and to act on anything credible. . . I will certainly keep you guys posted as much as possible!
-
yeah, sorry, not sure where this stuff happens. I'd guess the best 'areas' for a dog fight in the nabe and surrounding areas would be the yards/alleys behind big buildings where folks might not be willing to anger their fellow tenants by calling the cops on them. I have no knowledge of this - it's just a guess. I have seen, though, people very irresponsibly caring for dogs and encouraging vicious behavior. I have been talked out of calling the cops and saying that I hear a child crying in a locked and gated basement in the freezing cold since it was clearly a dog, too. not sure what I'll do next time, though, especially given the cops' concern about quality of life issues (no, that's not a tongue in cheek comment - cops from the board have told me that they are concerned and want to help our nabe be a safe place for everyone).
please, though, let us know if you hear anything. -
I will absolutely let you know what (if anything) happens. I do know that sometimes people are afraid to speak up about this, because an angry, abused dog, and its angry owner are often a pretty strong disincentive to reporting abuse.
-
you mean your friends said they saw dog fights on the streets? that seems unlikely.
-
From what I understood, it was on the street. I haven't seen this, though, and don't want to be alarmist here. . . I do, however, want to be aware of any animal abuse in the neighborhood, and to report it accordingly.

So waitaminute. There are backyard breeding operations that then sell their stock to people on the street? Whycome? Is there any real money in this scene? I'm imagining a guy with a trenchcoat filled with puppies..."Pssst. Hey. Hey, yeah, you, Mac. You wanna buy a canine? I got poodles, I got schnauzers, I got labs...hell I can get you a friggin' Kommondor, you want..."
but yea, ask your friend where the fights are. i'm curious. -
PLEASE PLEASE Do call the police if theres even a hint of an abused animal. Is it wrong to say you think it's a child when you know its a dog....I don't think so since the police came quickly when someone called about the abused dog.
And if you call anonomously how would the people know it was you? All I can think of is a poor animal being thrown into such a terrible situation.
And imagine the dogs that are family dogs and are stolen that are used as the bait dogs.
It's just horrible...........
-
actually, in that particular incident, I totally knew which neighborhood dogs were locked up and I was just pissed for having to hear them cry for the millionth time and wanted to up the ante. knowing what I know from nabe folks and the boards, the cops have been called on this pet owner before and there's nothing they can do in that particular situation, so really, I was being an asshole. I was just sick of ignoring the jerk. now ... I cross the street so I don't have the urge to make shit up on 911.
-
It's got to be incredibly annoying to have an inconsiderite neighbor who allows their dogs to bark without any regard to neighbors.
Its tough when people just don't understand that animals need to be cared for with some of the most basic of things, like warmth and shelter. -
I'm not sure about dog fighting in PH but I'm pretty damn sure it occurs in Crown Heights. I've seen guys "training" their pits on the street by holding a rope and having them jump up and hang on by their teeth. I've had too many people ask if my pit is fixed, even when she's wearing her muzzle. Even 10-12 year old kids! They like her because she's built like a tank so she'd make a nice breeder. Too bad for them she's spayed. You may want to check out my post in the CH forum about a dog abuser and my totally dumb reaction.

Man, dogs fight out here, cats fight out here, birds fight, too. Shit, squirrels even have a tiff or two. As do birds, especially bluejays. Come to think of it, rats fight every now and again. As do people.
Jesus, whatever OP heard, is probably bullshit, especially if OP is even in Prospect Heights, proper. I've heard it extends to Utica now. -

Except no one is forcing cats, birds, squirrels, bluejays, or people to fight (sometimes to the death) for their entertainment. -
Given the number of pitbulls that flood in to local shelters, dogfighting's got to be a pretty big phenomenon in NYC.
Btw, the ASPCA website has a helpful page with info on dogfighting and ways to help stop it, including this list of the different varieties:Most law enforcement experts divide dogfight activity into three categories: street fighting, hobbyist fighting and professional activity:
See more at http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=cruelty_dogfighting
* “Street” fighters engage in dog fights that are informal, street corner, back alley and playground activities. Stripped of the rules and formality of the traditional pit fight, these are spontaneous events triggered by insults, turf invasions or the simple taunt, “My dog can kill yours.” Many of these participants lack even a semblance of respect for the animals they fight, forcing them to train while wearing heavy chains to build stamina, and picking street fights in which they could get seriously hurt. Many of the dogs are bred to be a threat not only to other dogs, but to people as well—with tragic consequences.
“Street” fights are frequently associated with gang activities. The fights may be conducted with money, drugs or bragging rights as the primary payoff. There is often no attempt to care for animals injured in the fight and police or animal control officers frequently encounter dead or dying animals in the aftermath of such fights. This activity is very difficult to respond to unless it is reported immediately. “Professional” fighters and “hobbyists” decry the techniques and results of these newcomers to the “blood sport.”
* “Hobbyist” fighters are more organized, with one or more dogs participating in several organized fights a year as a sideline for both “entertainment” and to attempt to supplement income. They pay more attention to care and breeding of the dogs and are more likely to be traveling across state lines for events.
* “Professional” dog fighters often have large numbers of animals (often 50 or more) and earn money from breeding, selling and fighting dogs at a central location and on the road. They often pay particular attention to promoting established winning bloodlines and to long-term conditioning of animals. They regularly dispose of animals that are not successful fighters or breeders using a variety of methods, including shooting and blunt force trauma. Unlike “professional” dog fighters of the past, both “professionals” and “hobbyists” of today may dispose of dogs that are too human-aggressive for the pit by selling them to “street” fighters or others who are simply looking for an aggressive dog—thus contributing to the dog bite problem. -

I have also seen something similar to that (again on Washington,) only it wasn't a pitbull. I was absolutely horrified and didn't say anything, and felt awful for not calling out the abusers or calling the authorities. -

OK, I'm talking about forced fighting, with the dog owners breeding them to be aggressive and goading them on, not natural "tiffs" that all animals engage in from time time. Also, I think I was pretty clear in all of my posts that I wasn't sure if this was true, and that I wanted to investigate this further and act accordingly-- not jump to any alarmist conclusions. Finally, I am in PH proper, although some of the stuff I've heard about is in CH (past Washington Avenue), though.
