Friiiiied chicken (or southern food in general!)

Yeah I know its horribly bad for you, but I've been having a mad craving for some really good fried chicken. I almost never eat fried foods (or meat for that matter) but coming from the south, fried chicken is not just food, its art. Is there anywhere in PS that makes a decent fried chicken plate?

*just realizes that she hasn't had fried chicken since moving from the south...two+ years ago* Yeah, damnit, I deserve it!

  • best i've had lately (besides mine, of course 8) ) was not in PS, but was convenient to the F:

orchard street just below houston, called something like Georgia BBQ.

very nice catfish, collards, and cheese grits, too.
  • it's a little bit of a splurge, but the fried chicken at blue ribbon down on 5th is amazingly good.

was surprised at how good it was in fact.

wouldn't mind some now, in fact. this cold is making it difficult for me to taste anything though, so better save it.

Although if you're looking for the kind you don't put honey on, you'll be disappointed at Blue Ribbon. (I was. And don't tell me to leave the honey off -- it's better with the honey there, it's made for the honey)
    Forced to make my own...[/sigh]

SweetTea, have you been to Fette Sau in W'burg? They're next on my BBQ NY list . . . and maybe Orchard St after that . . .
I like Birdies in the east village okay. Nothing in Park Slope tho - get my wing hit with five spice powder at the takeout chinese.

i haven't. to tell you the truth, i don't make a habit of eating bbq up here. it's too bound to disappoint, given my upbringing.

i only ended up at the georgia place bc there's a monthly reading series i go to near there (mixer, at cakeshop), and i am not so into the LES scene to eat ironic hotdogs afterwards. i didn't order the bbq, but they did bring me a sample. it was tender, and the sauce was pretty good for non-nc style. sweet, but a bit sour, too. i still probably won't get bbq there, but those of you who had the misfortune to grow up far from allen & sons might well enjoy it.

the cheese grits weren't what i'm used to, but they were tasty, which is too rarely the case. great corn bread, too.

the collards were unusual -- stewed, but not shredded; sweet, no evidence of pork -- but good-tasting.

the fried chicken was beyond reproach. i prefer simple fried chicken -- good crust of self-rising flour, but no spices beyond salt and pepper -- which is what this is.

the catfish (a special) was also nice.

all in all, a fine effort for so far out of range. the staff was super friendly the night i was there -- they even told me they'd get the table sauce i suggested for next time. i appreciated that the collards and grits tasted good, rather than slavishly "authentic" without being up to snuff.

ETA: it's called Georgia Eastside BBQ. here's the yelp page: http://www.yelp.com/biz/georgias-eastside-bbq-new-york . i don't really agree with some of the reviews there, fwiw.

omg, allen & sons. i lived in chapel hill for a few years and the reference to them just made my mouth water, partially just from the thought of the pulled pork there and partially from the thought of its vinegary goodness. aaaaaaah. frustration. i will have to try to georgia place. did you ever go to pies and thighs? it used to operate out of the back of the rock star bar on kent, but is closed now and is moving to a new locale to open this summer, don't know the exact location. some of the better bbq i've had up here and very good basic fried chicken, along with banana pudding.
  • allen and sons is nothing in comparison to smithfields. cmon now.

i do give great honor to smithfield's, but i preferred allen & sons partially b/c of taste and partially b/c it was closer to me and i just got there more often. i loved that the smithfield's in garner, where i usually went, was on jones sausage road.

the best bbq i ever had, though, was at the combo gas/grill/grocery near where i worked on hwy 54 towards haw river. it was amazing.
  • There's a place called Jackson's bbq in Wilmington (where I'm from) that is amaaaazing. I actually was close friends with one of the Jackson sons so I went there simply by default for the first time, but was hooked after that.

Pulled pork and mac.and.mother.effing.cheese. Omg. Best ever. And sweet tea...
ugh. A trip back to the dirty south might be in order soon!
  • I was fe might be feeling like it might be crass to mention Manhattan, but seeing as ya'll are going on about confederate territory...

Dirty Bird on 14th just west of 7th avenue is the best fried chicken in these here 5 boroughs. It's a bad habit, but so so good.
  • I could live off of Allen&Sons fat-fried catfish. So freekin crispy on the outside and damn tender and moist on the inside. Dammit@$!%@$#
Anyone want to go this month? Catch a little March Madness and grab some hush puppies!
  • I know I will be charged with heresy but the Pathmark in the Atlantic Center used to do pretty mean fried chicked. Sides not so much.

hey, I'm still weeping about the closure of crown fried chicken at washington and prospect. that shit was good AND cheap.
  • I was walking on Vanderbilt yesterday (on the one stretch beween Beast and Joyce where everything is) and saw some divey looking place that said "Soul Food" out front. Don't know what they have but fried chicken should be on the menu (maybe with waffles!)

I would have stopped in but I was full from my Island's Jamaican patties.

I think you might be talking about Mitchells which I happen to loooove their fried chicken (that coming from a Yankee)

I thought of this you guys/gals when I came across this in Gothamist

  • ^mmmm boiled peanuts. There was a guy that sold these out of a big vat in a scary panel van near my old house in NC. Thinking back, I wonder if he ever asked kids to come find puppies and candy in that van...it was one of THOSE models

Wilmington, North Carolina. Cool. That's where my people are from. My mom grew up over on Henry Street off of Princess Place. Never been to Jacksons. Have to ask someone next time I go back down there.
  • this is without a doubt the most mouth watering thread i've ever seen on this board. what's good for soul food around ft greene and clinton hill? i don't go out to eat much so i'm pretty brain dead as to what's good.

ooo yeah! I didn't know Egg went fulltime! I thought they were just a breakfast place...

That sounds so good! I must try it! I usually can't find fried chicken in a restaurant that's as good as I can make it at home.

The only fried chicken I usually eat out is at Kennedy Fried Chicken at Nostrand and Winthrop (on my way home from work). It's pretty good.

I keep hearing that The Islands has delicious fried chicken, and I try to order it every time I go, but they never seem to have it.
  • kinda funny the amount of people who lived in the Chapel hill area on here. I lived there and Raleigh from 2003 to 2007 and Charlotte for a decade before that.

if anyone has been there recently a new bbq place called "BBQ Joint" opened up in chapel hill a few years ago and its cheaper and better than Allen & Sons. Also Coopers BBQ in Raleigh is amazing as well. Makes me miss the south alittle.

Sadly no where ive been in NYC has filled this void in my life.

oh and smithfields fried chicken will take years off your life.

You can try "Aunt Ruthie's" (I think that is the name) on Dekalb Avenue around Ashland for some soul food.

    BAD COMMAND OR FILE NAME

    ABORT, RETRY, FAIL?
  • haha

Allen & Sons is alittle pricey for what you get.

Im partial to BBQ Joint and Coopers but A&S is great bbq as well. Coopers gives you free fresh pork rinds which gives them a soft spot in my heart. Also the fact that I lived down the street from it helped.

yea i pass that place everyday goin to and from the subway. my buddy who used to live in the area always talks about wanting to go there (he lives in astoria now). might haveta commit ourselves to finally checkin it out. anyone got any thoughts on Five Spot? I heard mixed things from different people.
  • Well I live in Clinton Hill and for soul food, there are certain spots I frequent. Mitchells on Vanderbilt AVe has very good fried chicken andtheir yams are good too along with their potato salad. They fry the chicken as it is ordered...you might have to wait a few minutes but it is hot with a kick of pepper and well seasoned with salt and pepper only.Ruthies has 2 locations...on Dekalb across from Bklyn Hospital and on Myrtle and Emerson...across from the Pratt Art Store....they have good food, especially the fried chicken wings, ribs, yams, greens ,potato salad and red velvet cake to boot. But when I really want to splurge on good soul food I trek to Royal Rib House on Halsey off of Throop. You cant miss the place cause there is always a line out the door. I usually call in my order and just bypass the line and pick up my food. There food is exquisite. The ribs are rotisserie as well as the chicken and very tender, well seasoned and the bbq sauce is the key. They bottle the sauce and it is sold in Foodtown. Sometimes I get the sauce and put it on what I grill...it is called Calvins.Everything there is delicious. I have been going to them for over 30 years.Well worth the trek. The fried chicken is awesome and the cabbage is better than the greens. All the sides are to die for. Try it once. the number is 718 453 9284. You will be lucky if you get thru but just keep trying. Let me know how you like it and thank me later.....and no...i am not related to any of the above mentioned restaurants ...just like good food and dont mind travelling for it.On another note. anyone who likes spanish food has got to try Sofritos on E 57th off first..talk about cheap delicious food in abundance...check out the website and make the trip with some friends. We went for girls nite out and had a blast.
  • The other spot for to die for fried chicken is the North Carolina Country Kitchen. Its on Atlantic way up past the Tower Isles factory on the westbound side of the street. Its on the corner across from the Dunkin Donuts and Baskin Robbins. (Sorry, I don't remember the name of the street) They have real southern cooking just like my grandma used to make. They also have a store that's next door to the Baskin Robbins that sells all kinds of southern spices, fixins, etc.

Oh my gawd, Sweet Tea & I have been meaning to go there since we talked about it last year! Must Go NOW!!! Yum!
  • too true!
  • thanks a bunch arlette! good to know there's a ruthies on myrtle, that's closer than the dekalb one. the red velvet cake is sealing the deal on that being the first one i investigate. Royal Rib House sounds like something to make a day out of once the weather's nicer (waitin in a long line while its still chilly doesn't sound fun). I'm definitely going to see what that's all about one saturday, I'll be sure to let ya know what I think!
