What did I tell you about using big words?
  • I am just "visiting" this thread and don't live in this specific neighborhood. Having said that, anyone who does live here can throw out my comments with the trash.

I did have an experience living in Boerum Hill in the early 80's.. way early in the gentrification process. At the time I was a single 30 year old female with two young kids. I am a Brooklyn gal and did what I was raised to do... made friends with all the locals (at that time including the prostitutes and the street people). After a time they watched out for me and the kids.

I know times have changed and these young hoodlum types who are out to at least harass and at worst hurt people may not be willing to "make friends" but I do understand the posters who brought forth that the perception that You, who move in to the neighborhood paying those high rents, no matter who you are are perceived by the long time residents as interlopers have a valid point. . I don't know how you make yourself known as a "good neighbor" given the circumstance and given the year is 2008.

I set forth no answers just a sympathetic vibe to all of you who are newer residents in an area that has its own history.

veets, that's pretty much what I did when I moved to Crown Heights. I talked to just about everyone and still do. I'm not saying that the whole neighborhood knows and likes me but people don't look at me like an outsider as much. I'm known mostly because of my blue hair but also from feeding the stray cats. Someone has left me cans of cat food by the plastic bin where I feed the strays. I can't walk very far without seeing someone I know or chatting with someone new. I don't know if that means anyone would help me out if something happened but I like knowing my neighbors.
  • How do low life losers tell if you live in the area or not? I have been here 20 years and I look just like people who moved in last week.

    ....um....

Actually, you haven't spelled it correctly either. It's "MERRIAM-Webster."

    ...Sorry. As you were.

    LOL
im 4 pages in to this and trying to decide whether this post or alafair'sabout the word xi is funnier. how the thread went from random violence to racism to speaking / spelling lessons is certainly entertaining.

i figured id post now irrespective of the fact that i have 2 pages to go.

    I found a TYPO!
Ha! Ya got me! That's awesome. Well, I never said one has to be perfect but at least try, right?

so a mispell, a typo, and missed punctuation all in 4 words
from the one giving the lesson ? sweet

your on cyBer space = you're on cyber space,

the only thing worthwhile here is that BF didnt get hurt
and was kind enough to inform.

glad for that, and thanks for the heads up.

Sigh. Ok- not that I really care to even go on with this (redundancy abounds!), but this whole things started with my criticism about the use of the word "irregardless." Then the responder (to whom I have since apologized to for making his life even more difficult at that moment) spelled cyber as "cyper." I put the large B in there to make a point without totally getting in his grill, so to speak. Sue me- it was a long week.

Let's let the bygones be gone. Its been over for a while now Garfunky- the party ended long before you got here.
