Did anyone make it to the Green Market early today?

I'm pretty sure they were not there but wasn't specifically looking for them so I can't be 100% certain.

Nope, they were not there.
-
Damn! I Can't wait!
Want. Fresh. Fish.
-
I think it's the last week of March that is the first week of them...

Carnivore,
I read one of your old posts about the butcher. Did you find a good one nearby? Or do your rely solely on the Green Market for meat? -

I mostly get meat from the Green Market or my wife sometimes stops at Whole Foods on the way home from work. I don't have a car, so most of the shops in other neighborhoods are too far for everyday shopping for me. I do like the Pork Store on 5th Ave.

And I occasionally order meat from Fresh Direct, which has decent quality, but not the personal interaction with the butcher that I really want. -
Too bad there's not a good butcher in the neighborhood. Currently, we live close enough to Los Paisanos but that'll be too far for regular weekly shopping.

I was given a recommendation for Fish Tales (on Court Street) from sweet tea and they were fantastic. The fish was fresh and delicious (especially their mussels and clams). I asked one time if they would deliver to me on Underhill and they said that they would deliver but only in the mornings between 8-9. But it is definitely worth the trip there for fish.

Yeah, between Fish Tales and Paisanos, BoCoCa is set. But with no car, it's not for everyday for PH or PS. Good to know about the delivery, but as I recall you had a really large order when you were looking for a place last time. I'm not sure they'd be so willing to come to Prospect Heights with a $20 or $30 order.
Luckily, we're almost into peak Green Market season, and I'll at least have awesomely fresh local fish once a week. -
What are the prices like? Really pricey or reasonable?

Quite reasonable. Actually lower prices than most quality fish stores, but more expensive than Chinatown. -
they were there today, and i wasn't even all that early.
we got 8 butters (one of my favorites) and some flounder roe for $6.
anybody know how to cook flounder roe?

Awesome! But I'm surely too late now.

I'll check with Mrs. C about the flounder roe. -
Mrs. C has never cooked flounder roe, but by analogy with other roe, such as shad roe:
Soak it milk for a while first (makes the aroma more mild). Then try flouring it and sauteeing in butter. -
love flounder roe
(well, all roe actually)
yes
just flour them up
saute with capers, parsley & lemon
let them get a little crispy at the end -
Don't know how Blue Moon has been faring. Most Montaulk dragger captains take the winter off. Those who have been coming back have been killed by high diesel fuel prices, to the point where some are not going out fishing. There was a recent story in the East Hampton Star about this, but I can't find the link.

thanks, y'all. i went with capers and parsley. a good time was had by all.

Tons of fish today.
End of the local strawberry season and beginning of the "local" (South Jersey) peach season.
Local cherries, raspberries, blueberries in full swing.
Squash, tomatoes, string beans, lettuce, radishes, mushrooms, collards, chard, turnips, snap peas, snow peas, fava beans, herbs, potatoes, spring onions...
I love this time of year! -
SO GOOD.
Howdy, Stranger!
