Yummy For My Tummy
This is for the foodie in you...
After 6 years living in the Crown , finding good food is still a challenge. Let me rephrase...Finding satisfying, non-West Indian food, is the challenge. Finding a nice, sit-down restaurant is close to impossible. I always have to venture outside of the Crown if I want these things. Rewind to Saturday night. At the recommendation of my very close friend, and fellow Crownie, four of us cabbed it over to Clinton Hill to dine at Kush Cafe www.kushcafe.com This spot, though inconspicuously located at Fulton/Grand, is a sheer delight. My friend told me that the food was absolutely delicious, but I went with no expectations. I have been sorely disappointed before. I had no idea of the cuisine. I saw the sign on the door indicating that they serve French/Pan-African cuisine. I didn't have a clue about this distinct type of cuisine. I automatically associated this with food from the Motherland(yes, I am black) and I just hoped that it wasn't too deep for me to understand and appreciate.
Not knowing what to eat, we ordered three entrees all of which were very tasty. The whole fish is just that, a whole fish cooked to perfection with a bed of julienned vegetables to accompany it. The surf and turf was mouthwatering, and the seafood maffe was tasty as well. One of the definite standouts are the plantains. I have had plantains prepared a variety of different ways, but these were so very tasty and simply baked, I think. The desserts were equally pleasing and a perfect way to cap off the dinner. (love the chocolate cake!)
The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. With the absence of a chidren's menu, they did agree to serve a plate of grilled shrimp for the little guy in our party. He was delighted. I will admit that it did take a bit of time for the food to arrive, but it was worth it. We were able to socialize with others in the restaurant while we waited and never felt rushed.
Note there is a $35 minimum for credit cards.
I give this spot 4 Crowns!!!!!

Ok- I'll give this place the benefit of the doubt until otherwise.
But really,CrownQueen wrote: This is for the foodie in you...
...that's just gross. If this is your "ad," you need a different writer.
The whole fish is just that, a whole fish(don't mind the eyes, visible tongue, and teeth) -
i love whole fish -- the cheeks are the best part! but i also know some people get really grossed out by seeing the head (silly, imo, but that's another discussion), so i suppose it's good to warn them.
thanks for the reminder to check out kush. (i know we've had a shill problem on this board, but this post doesn't seem that way to me, fwiw.) -
thanks again for the reminder -- we finally thought of kush when we were casting around for a place to have a nice "treat" meal, and it was wonderful! the atmosphere was lovely but unfussy -- felt like a nice dinner but not a relaxed one. the service was friendly and attentive, not at all pushy. it was too chilly to sit outside, but i'm curious to see their garden.
we had the clams as an appetizer -- they were tender and lovely in a somewhat spicy, a little bit rich broth. we had said no to extra bread -- the bread itself was not too exciting, though the vegetable/oil dip served with it was divine -- but we changed our minds once we tasted the clam broth. mmmmm...
for a main course, i had "couscous royal", which was a stew of lamb, chicken, and a lovely sausage served with fluffy couscous on the side. delicious, and great as left-overs, too. the gf had beef ribs, which were good, but could have been more tender. we both devoured the mashed potatoes and spinach that came with her food. yum! the potatoes were beautifully plated, too -- kind of a stack of wide ribbons.
for dessert, we had creme brule, which was good if unspectacular.
the wines are all south african, and the ones we had were wonderful. (i don't say that too lightly, though i am not an expert.) i had a pinot taj (sp?), which i'd never heard of but loved. the gf had cabernet sauvignon.
we will definitely be back. there were so many things i wanted to try on the menu, especially the seafood dishes. they had several vegetarian entrees that sounded good, too, so we're keeping it in mind as a place to go with veggie visitors. for us, it's about the same distance as walking to PS for dinner -- somehow i'd always thought it was farther.
