Any ideas?

I have a big problem and I wanted to know if anyone has any ideas for me. Basically I live on the third floor of a building my aunt lives with her daughter on the forst floor (she owns the building). On the second floor is my grandmother, 4 cousins, 1 of their boyfriends, 1 of their girlfriends, 2 kids and 3 of my cousins friends. Yes its pretty ridiculous and not one of them work and they all stay home all day and play video game smoke weed. But hey thats on them. Here is my problem one of my cousins hangs out on the steps leading up to my place with her friends and they smoke cigarettes. Now the smell is seepinto my apartment and is making it smell and also causing me difficulty breathing because of my asthma which I honestly belive I got from them smoking on the steps. I have already asked my cousin to stop the smoking on the steps and she hasnt, my aunt cant do anything because my grandmother is there and as long as shes there my cousins basically have a place to stay because she wont put them out. I know if I ask again and they keep on I will lose my temper and nothing good will come out of that because they are crackheads and Im not going to jail for anybody.
S I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to stop smoke from coming into my apartment. Would an air cleaner/ionizer do the trick, fans in front of my doors? Ill listen to anyone's ideas. Yes I know I can move but I pay 600 a month for a three bedroom where I live by myself.
Sorry for the long post. Just had to vent a little.

  • I have the same problem with my next door neighbors. The kids smoke in the hallway between our apartments. Fortunately, there are bathrooms right next to our front doors and as long as we both have the fans on at the same time it helps. It sucks that your family is so uncooperative but that's the trade off for your rent I guess. An ionizer might help, but I doubt it.
  • $600 a month for a 3 bedroom, all by yourself?!?! :x

Seriously, just suck it up, stop complaining, and get a air purifier with all that damn cash your saving. And I mean this in the sweetest way, I really do. It's just that you can't look a gift horse in the mouth (or whatever that saying is :D ) You know what I mean?

Air-purifier and a box fan blowing out the window.

Yea I hear you about the tradeoff but not being able to breath right really sucks. Its one thing if the hallway dmells like sh** which it usually does but when you can feel the smike coming into your lungs it's not a real good feeling.
  • Well it sounds like a good airwasher is the thing for you. Especially if you have allergies etc.

WhiFi on the boards has this model and it's well worth it. Your health is more important than the cost.

  • When the weather is nice, you might want to put fans blowing INTO the apartment in all the rooms with windows that face the back
  • Try some weatherstripping around/under the door, as well.
  • Um, maybe I'm the only one who thinks this, but for the sake of not only your health, but that of your Gma and those little kids, shouldn't you try to get your aunt/landlady to put an end to smoking in the building? If not, your health really is not worth the savings. If that were the case we could all move someplace far cheaper, but less safe than wherever we are.

If I were you and I didn't want to deal directly with the crackheads, I'd invite Gma to live in one of my extra rooms. Then the shiftless cousins will have to get their acts together to come up with the rent if your aunt will even let them stay.

My Aunt basically cant kick them out, they have been living there their whole lives basically. The house was bought my deceased grandfather and grandmother back in the 60's. My grandma had trouble keeping it up so my aunt put the house in her name and she paid the mortgage and taxes. So the house is paid for my grandmother doesnt pay any rent to my aunt for her place because the house is paid for. The rent money I give my aunt is basically to cover some remodeling she did to the building and for water, texes, etc. Moving my grandma into my apt would do nothing because while they stress her out to no end, she raised them from babies and consider them like her own children. So as long as she is there they will have a place to stay. My Aunt can do anything because its so many of them and because of the drug element they are unpredictable and who knows wha they would do to retaliate. I dont want to get involved because Iknow my temperment and while Iam not a violent person, I am not the kind of person to say the same thing over and over agin. If I say stop smoking then it better stop because I will not repeat myself. So all I can do for now is worry about my self and my apartment and trying to breath.
  • Use the extra money you are saving in rent to invest in an airtight door like labs have.

Or something. Then you won't get any of that through your door. If that is the only place you are getting it. A good air filter is not a bad idea. But they can be an ongoing expensive and a bit of a pain. Especially for that much space.

  • Yeah I was thinking of getting an air cleaner just for my bedroom. Sice I spend the bulk of my time in there.

Geez, with that door he could also open a bank!...well except for the crackhead problem...err, nevermind.

Is the door the only source of smoke smell? You could build a little extension onto the door (sort of like those things restaurants put in front of their doors in the winter to keep cold drafts out...only yours would go on the inside. Then put an exhaust fan blowing into the extension to pressurize it and keep the hallway air out. Probably overkill.

I still think I'd start with a visit to hardware store and buy a whole bunch of weatherstripping - both the foam kind that seals around the doorjam and one of those rubber sweep strips for the bottom.
