Planes landing into LGA overfly PH/PS on days when the wind blows from the north or the west. So, if those conditions take place for a number of days in a row, you'll think that there's more traffic, while in fact there isn't. And there couldn't really be a lot more traffic into LGA anyway: the airport is so saturated that there is no significant room for more traffic slots.
About the wind and landings: Planes land/takeoff into the wind, and LGA has 2 runways. One is oriented pretty much north to south, and roughly parallel to Prospect Park West, so planes landing on it from the south fly over us already aligned with the runway centerline and often with the landing gear out. That's on approaches with the wind from the north.
On approaches with the wind from the west, they fly over Prospect Park heading towards Jackson Heights, Queens, and then take a steep left-side turn around Shea Stadium to align with La Guardia's west/east runway. That's known as the "Expressway Visual" approach because it follows part of the Long Island Expressway. Ask for a seat on the left side when checking in for a flight into LGA and if you're lucky you could see this:
