What aren't you doing now....that the economy is tanking?
Subject: What aren't you doing now....that the economy is tanking?
I'm back to coloring my own hair and forgoing pedis. Just wondering what, if anything, other people are doing? Are you feeling the economy's pinch yet, or not? Worried? Not? Thinking property values will hold in our area better than others, or are we destined to tank too?Comments

We're not eating out anymore unless the 2 of us can both eat for <$20 and we've cut out wine with weeknight dinners. No more fancy Union Market shopping. Growing my hair out as I can no longer afford to get it cut every other month.
I'm very worried about the local economy...after being laid off in January, I've been unable to find full time work and am attempting to make ends meet working multiple part time retail jobs. -
*snort* I've been "tightening my belt" since 2002. I work in theater and I'm an office temp, and BOTH jobs absolutely TANKED in the year following 9/11; I survived 2002 on a part-time job and cash advances on my credit card. I've been trying to pay off that debt for the past six years, and that means I haven't had much disposable income to speak of for a while.
But damn skippy I've got the hang of "recession living" by now, and I've finally made a decent enough dent in my debt to actually start having some mad money. So -- I actually may be doing more now DURING the recession than I was six years ago. -
I've giving up shopping at expensive supermarkets & now go to CTown... I always wondered how no matter what meat at CTown is at least $4 dollars cheaper than other supermarkets.
Limited my cab rides from the city and around our 'hood...
started downloading more movies than going to the theater as much-- $12 a ticket is alot...
ok... this thread is depressing... -
Weird thing is business is booming for me. Im a freelance graphic designer and im making pretty good money right now and im turning down jobs from other people because im so busy. Im waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop but for now "more sushi please".

business is ok for me too, i'm a software consultant and luckily we have the ability to serve overseas clients (and are rapidly picking up chinese/japanese/indian clients) However, my boyfriend works in the luxury industry (well, he's a tattoo artist) and he's feeling the burn. People are making appointments, but they're all canceling last minute (especially weekend appts, which leads me to believe its traditional-job working people who are canceling, his weekday mid-day appts are still ok.)
We're still traveling and thank god I can afford gas for the moment, but I havn't bought anything "fun" in quite a while. I'm doing my summer shopping at old navy for $8 tanktops and am waiting to get my roots dyed until june when they really need it now. We're drinking less and using cabs less. -
business is booming for me, too. the regulatory crap has made my law firm a ton of money so far this year and late last. I'm busy all the time and earning more than I have in my life. I guess the legal biz pays ... sometimes.

Same as always: spend the minimum, save the maximum.

i walk to prospect park instead of driving there..saves on gas...

Why, for pity's sake? There's plenty that we can do to economize and still enjoy ourselves.
We don't NEED to take cabs or eat out all the time. I rarely eat out -- so what? I've learned how to be an awesome cook. cabs? feh -- I can walk or take my bike, and that also saves my having to go to the gym (or, since I do belong to the Y, it ADDS to what I do there).
Entertainment? Hell, there are TONS of free movies, concerts, plays, and such, especially now that we're coming close to summer. Lots of the big museums are "pay what you wish" for admission, so you can get into the Met for a buck.
And there's even cheaper fun to be had -- why not just take a leisurely stroll through a part of town you've never visited? Make a picnic and go to the park? Get together a bunch of friends for a board game night? Read?

I just clean out my rubbers with a little soap and water and they're good as new for the next girl.

There are a bunch of free film screenings (courtesy of the Brooklyn Arts Council 2008 Film Festival):

Might I make a little plug for your friendly local public library? Books, CDs, DVDs, programs, concerts...all free!
Signed,
On shift right now. But sadly in Queens. Boo hoo. -
SAdly, visits to friends upstate have come to a halt due to the ridiculous gas prices so I am truly discovering my nabe and all it has to offer. Not eating out as much or even buying snacks.Have you seen the costs of cookies unless they are on sale....simple box of vanilla wafers are near four dollars at Bravo on Washington.Ave...good grief. As for movie rentals, not, those lousy movies that repeat on cable are starting to look good to me.But I agree with the above poster, thank goodness summer is approaching with the free movies and concerts, central park summer stage and philharmonic and prospect park as well.I do travel to Costco or BJs for my salmon and chicken as the prices are better and the quantity for the buck than the supermarket. It is only going to get worse unfortunately. Terrible times, I tell you we are living in terrible times.

AMNH is also "pay what you wish," as is the Bronx Zoo on Wednesdays. A membership there wasn't terrible though, and gives admission to the Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, Brooklyn Aquarium, etc.

I rarely eat out, except with the kids. Which is restrained to cheap, and hopefully leftover filled to fill them for the next day. We do a lot of going to the park, walking, not subway. I ditched cable, there isn't anything worth watching anyway. I needed the cell phone for work, but the land line was unnecessary. I don't ever rent movies, and I hit the library at least once a week, sometimes two or three times. I dig through the interweb to find free events, of which there is usually many going on. -
moving sucks, too many van drivers these days. i had the niche thing going on craig list for a long time.
cutting back to the bare bones. i take almost every work i used to reject. like last min in the middle of the night. -
Work as an RN in big UES hospital. Love my job, excellent salary. Seeing more patients than ever as hospital cuts back. Can't complain and sorry to read about those who are feeling the pinch. Now say "ahh".

The freer the better. Try www.freenyc.net It's a decent weekly list of free & cheap stuff going on that's a little more than the picnic in the park, although that's still my favorite nice weather activity.
