Subject: In Praise of Cheryl's

A positive post: Has anyone noticed how well Cheryl's restaurant (on Underhill) appears to be doing? Along with Sepia, her eatery has made a big difference in our neighborhood. We try to eat at Cheryl's at least a couple times a month because the food is excellent (and she's a kind person who remembers if you're from the neighborhood) and it's a lot less time than trekking over to 5th Avenue. We walked by the other day and there were at least ten or twelve people outside, waiting in line for brunch.

Now, if we could only do something about the bodega next door!

Comments

  • What would you do about the bodega next door? They're really friendly.
  • I love Cheryl's, too! It's quickly becoming our go-to neighborhood place. I'm so happy to see that she's doing so well.

Like you, we try to get there a couple of times a month.

Good food, and good cocktails (have you tried "The Stinger"?--it's good.)

Don't know about the bodega, but what's up with the sidewalk shed at the building on the corner of Underhill and St. John's? Is that recent? It really makes that corner look uninviting.
  • Cheryl's is awesome. Ive only ever been there for brunch but have never been disappointed.
  • They may be friendly but the place is dirty and doesn't have much of a selection. Plus, they don't sweep up in front of the store; the bodega always generates a lot of trash on the street and sidewalk. Have you visited the upgraded bodega at the corner of Underhill and the playground? That's the kind of place I had in mind.
  • +1 for cheryl's - definitely a great spot...i remember when she had a show on food network back in the day (not that indicates the quality of a chef <cough> rachel ray).

As for the scaffolded place on the corner, you'll find more discussion of it here. Was supposed to be a new development, allegedly on hold due to financing issues:

  • The guys in that bodega are very nice but their selection is indeed very lacking. Not to mention - no beer. They do have a great Bodega cat though!

I have only been to Cheryl's once but was quite impressed. Wish they took credit cards but other than that I highly recommend it.

Not sure if its a recent change, but they do take credit cards now. I paid by cc this past weekend.
  • Great news, it was cash only when I went a few months back.
  • The vegeterarian cous-cous is spectacular. That bodega isn't nearly as bad as the blight on the neighborhood at the corner of St. John's and Underhill. _SSOC_ATED. I mean this corner looks like Iraq, for God sakes! How in the world can this place get away with looking like this?
  • what?? the ssoc'ated rocks. seriously one of the best bodegas around. and up until the reincarnation of the one at prospect and underhill, it had the best selection of new-comer products (soy milk and the like) of any of them.
  • Another plug for Cheryl's. Or as I say to the husband every time we go there, "Really, this shouldn't just be our 'we can't decide' default. It's rightfully a destination."

And another yee-haw, while we're at it, for the Stinger. YUM.
  • We just move the neighborhood last week (St. Johns and Underhill), and have noticed that every day that the place is packed. We figured it was good, but it sounds as if it's really good. Once we can extract ourselves from the Jamaican patties we're going to Cheryl's.

Oh, and Hi. Glad to be in the neighborhood.
  • Credit cards? Nice. I hate cash-only joints.

Cheryl's is very cool. Great atmosphere.
  • What is wrong with the Bodega? Seriously. And while I do love Cheryl's and Cheryl, the bartender/barista guy could crack a smile once in a while, no?

Funny you should say that! There is a sign posted next to the checkout stating that they will be closed May 16th for renovations! We've been here 10+ years and they have been saying they were going to renovate since the begining, so it's nice to hear they actually have the ball rolling!

As to the corner looking like Iraq, that has more to do w/the chinese food takeout on Underhill and the people who hang out in front of it! The people from Associated empty the trash can on that corner all the time...so they are doing there part to keep the corner clean. I agree the corner can be nasty, especially on the weekend. Our coop gets ticketed on the weekend due to the trash blowing all over the corner. It sucks!
  • +1 more for Cheryl's. Ate their tastyness yesterday for brunch. TASTY!!!
  • Ate their what?

    Ha ha.

  • Subject: Cheryls Sepia and the bodegas are great

I love Cheryls too, and Sepia, AND the bodegas. I use more of my imagination on what the building on the corner (the former launderette with the sidewalk shed) might become... and when some nice businesses will join Impact Theater in bringing some life to the next block down.
  • Let me balance this discussion out:

I ate at Cheryl's twice. While the food was good, it seemed somewhat overpriced for food I could probably make at home on an inspired night.

I can imagine it's a fantastic option on a First Saturday at the Museum if you're feeling especially hungry and don't want to walk too far. I also am glad to see businesses like it on Underhill. I just don't think it's good enough for me to ever walk over from the other side of Flatbush just for.

    Sorry. :(
  • I think every neighborhood has a place like that--great if you're nearby, just "eh" if you live more than 10 minutes away.
  • The lunch there is just terrible, their service is no better!!
