opera man on st.marks
is anyone familiar with the opera man on st. mark's near the corner of washington?
he chooses to perform (practice) every afternoon and subjects the block to off-key notes and stains the neighborhood.
i'm always down to support the arts and would love to hear Tosca or Carmen anytime - this just doesn't even come close.
this is closer to fingernails on a chalkboard
any suggestions on how to kindly subdue the prospect pavarotti?

Not familiar, but he sounds like a blast. In a "laughing at", sort of way.
Questions: How long does this go on for?
Is this right outside your window and you work at home so you have no escape?
Last week one of the high schoolers was walking past my house and for TWO days in a row I caught him singing a Neo song....loudly and badly. Points for singing with heart, though. I love that kid. -
once this dude back in college was serenading this girl, with love songs that was horribly off key.
I was in my favorite class trying to learn. he kept this up for 10 mins. i just got sick of it. i went into the stairwell and told him to stuff it and he is a lousy singer. -
It varies day to day -
Today I was gifted with a performance from about 7 to 9:30. He went for a good hour and then it was one and off for a good half.
Sometimes it's earlier in the afternoon and occasionally I get a repeat performance at night.
Mockingbirds would be soothing compared to to this. -
On several occasions I've seen a 30s/40s guy, a little rounded, walking around my area singing opera and non-opera songs, but belting them all out opera-style. It always makes me smile. He's just walking around GAP or down St. Johns singing away. I wonder if it's the same guy.

This thread has been picked up by Gowanus Lounge, FYI.

i think i've heard this guy, too. he has a nice voice. i got the impression the OP was complaining about someone with a bit less musicality. -
The Gowanus link is 404'd, but onNYTurf picked it up from there...

Too bad it's not Adam Sandler doing his Opera Man from SNL

ohmygod you're talking about my downstairs neighbor!!!!
he's on the 3rd floor, i'm on the 4th. he's ALWAYS singing! and it's not very good! it's always scales and practice exercises, never full songs!
i can't believe i didn't see this earlier.
i'm not usually home during the day, but i can't even imagine! cause he's got a regular 6pm thing too, and a weekend thing, and a morning thing, and a ...
i moved into this place about a year and a half ago (been in the nabe 8 years) and my super awesome landlord was like, oh, everyone's friendly here, and the guy below loves to sing, sing, sing!
and he's not social - maybe he's a nice guy, but the one time i actually ran into him in the hallway he was so spooked that someone was behind him he actually physically jumped and ran into his apartment (and i'm not scary, really!)
where are you guys that you can hear it? our building is actually on washington but the back faces st. marks on the corner and we're in the back of the building. -
I think I am right next to you.
man - he's "performing" right now and it's god awful. -

This was my first thought upon reading this thread (common reaction, I'm sure).
I've wondered over the last few years why someone hasn't done something similar on a daily/weekly podcast or TouTube series or something, reading off the days/week's top headlines in Opera Man format.
(confession: was that close to doing it myself a few years back
) -
youtube it or put a small note with a link to this page on his door.
