Franny's should just pack up and move to Manhattan already

Subject: Franny's should just pack up and move to Manhattan already

....because I think almost everyone eating there lives there.

this has to explain why, on a weekend where it seemed like there was no one in the neighborhood, Franny's was so packed to the gills on Sunday night that they weren't even seating people around 8:00 PM or so for the night.

i find it awful that i have not been able to eat at a supposed "neighborhood" place for years because it's so impossible to even sit and eat at a table there.

feel free to dismiss this as the frustrated rant of someone feeling a bit too entitled to a table wherever he wants...... :)

  • i've never had a problem getting a table. i go often and on the weekends...

sometimes have to wait 20 mins, but it's no big deal...

be proud that your hood as such a destination restaurant.
  • 20 minutes (or triple that) would absolutely be no big deal to me, but it's not been my experience there since the write-ups began, which was the last time I ate there.

i'm very proud of destination restaurants in the area, but am prouder of the ones that someone around the corner can get a meal at every once in a while.
  • waiting 20 minutes is no big deal? where do you wait? do you hover over the tables like they make you do at coco roco? do they have a bar?

    They have a bar.

Also, there's usually not much wait on weekdays.
  • the wait is part of the pricing strategy; by the time you actually get to sit down and eat you are so grateful you don't mind that you're paying 30 bucks for pizza and a glass of wine.
  • Try a weekday...you'll probably even snag an outdoor table.
  • My husband and I eat there during the week at "old people time" (aka getting there by about 6:15-6:30 PM), and have almost never waited. Just make sure that there's no big BAM event (like Paul Simon) that night, or you'll wait forever like we did a few weeks ago.

Of course, now that we have a 2-month old daughter at home and no local family... our Franny's days are probably over. Alas. :(

The only problem with "old man time" is that in our neighborhood, that's also "precocious kid time."

Couldn't have said it better myself.

A 20 minute wait for a table in a restaurant that serves pizza? Screw that. While I'm waiting for a table at Franny's, I'll use my cell phone to get a pizza delivered to me from Domino's to Franny's bar before I get a table. Hungry people standing in line at Franny's sniffing my $7 Domino's pizza will cry wishing they were as smart as me. Too hungry to wait.

If you can't stand waiting, you might want to try Convivium Osteria where allegedly stick you to the minute:

right. i can see that, or lunch, being the only way to eat there without wanting to physically hurt the host/hostess.

i honestly need to remind myself of whether this pizza is as good as people claim it is, or if it's just as good as folks who've never been to New Haven (or DiFara's....or L&B......) think it is.

The best pizza in the world is the white clam pizza at Pepe's. So good. Mmmmmmmmm.
  • Franny's is good, but not the best. I personally like the pizza at Amorina better, and DiFara's is the tops, but it is really hard to compare a straightforward pizza with something more gourmet like Frannys. Frannys is good for the neighborhood. Now if only the brooklyn pizza factory on vanderbilt was half way decent...
