automatic pet feeders
I'm interested in hearing any experiences, positive or negative, with automatic feeders (for cats), particularly for households with two or more cats (most of the feeders I've seen spew out the food into only one bowl--did the cats fight over it, did one push the other away, etc?) Specific brand recommendations would be great. Thanks!

Hi Asil. Back in my cat days I had 2. I tried an auto-feeder and it seemed to work fine. They didn't fight over the food (they didn't like to eat at the same time, anyway). Perhaps if your kitties are used to eating at the same time, or if they're territorial about their bowls an auto-feeder might not be a good bet. I don't remember what brand it was that I used, but I bought it at my local pet shop. They're almost all the same from what I remember, although there may be some awesome new innovation on the market that I'm unaware of.
One other note, I advise against auto-waterers. Auto-feeders for dry food are a great gadget, but the auto-waterers encourage less than frequent water changes and that's a bad idea on many fronts. -
Yeah, they both dive for their bowls and gobble as fast as they can, with some pushing and shoving, which is why I'm concerned that it might not be such a great idea to dispense into just one bowl. But then again, the feeder would allow smaller, more frequent meals evenly spaced throughout the day, which might slow the frenzy. At least that is the hope.
There is a super-fancy, sleek, stainless steel high-end feeder that has a two-bowl attachment. Very nice, but $500. Sigh. -
$500!!!! Whuwhaaaa? Sheesh. I mean, I love my dog, and often spend too much money on him because he's my only "child" for now... but $500?? It better wipe their little kitty asses, too!
If they both lunge at their kibble like that perhaps an auto-feeder isn't the greatest idea. Unless the feeder had some sort of dispensing limit and a timer it would seem your feline friends could eat themselves pretty sick. For $500 that one just might have both! -
I know, it's absurd. Clearly it's targeted at folks who might be buying in the Richard Meier building and need a stainless-steel feeder to match their sub-zero fridge.
Even the low-end feeders aren't cheap, but many do have timers and dispensing limits. This is the main reason I want to get one. Between work and my commute, I'm gone for 11 hrs/day. When I feed them breakfast, they eat it all within seconds, and then they have to wait 11 hours for the next meal. I think they would be a lot more relaxed if they ate smaller, more frequent meals.
