Air conditioner installation? — Brooklynian

Air conditioner installation?

Having left an apartment with central AC, I now have to purchase a unit. My bedroom window is kinda narrow-- 21 3/4th inches. The unit I want is only 18 1/2 inches but it says the window must be at least 23 inches. What the heck?

The unit probably has some metal slides on both sides that these little plastic accordian pieces slide out to fit the window. Take a tape measure to the store with you and measure the front of the unit from the tip of the metal part to the tip of the other metal part. You may need one of those slider casement units instead of a regular a/c
  • No! Those are so expensive. Can't I take off that metal part? All this and more to be answered by a hottie at Lowe's!!!!!
  • There are very few AC installation problems that cannot be solved with a hacksaw, a brick, some styrofoam, and a roll of duct tape.

that is true for many things not just A/C's ;)
  • At Michaels they had fucking shocking pink duct tape. I bought a roll and a roll of purple to go along with and complement it. I'm not sure what needs taping yet, but I'm going to start looking around the apartment for things to wrap.

And yes, go down with your thinking cap and tape measure and see if you can figger a way to _make_ it fit. Extra points for creativity and the use of power tools. Double extra points for eschewing power tools on jobs that obviously call for them.

You never get points for eschewing power tools when you have an excuse to use them!

Sheesh. You'll never make it as a mountain man. Beware when the bombs fall.

  • Dear LORD you guys get up early....... or perhaps stay up late?

Daver, I WANT that pink tape. I need it. I wish Macgyver(sp) had hot pink tape!!!!!

All my friends said they never measured it just threw it in the window. But the window sash is so high........... I am going to Lowe's with a drawing and measurements.
