i am so so sorry that happened, that is mad fucked up. i hope you are okay.
  • argh, I'm not easily angered (at all), but this kind of stuff pisses me off.

It's really hard to believe people still do this stuff to others because of their sexual preference. What do these people have to prove? What are they afraid of? What kind of girl (you said he was with his girlfriend) would want to be with such an insecure, ignorant monster? What the FUCK does it matter to him what you do with whoever you do it with?

    I just don't get it.

    Hope you get better quick.
  • neartoms wrote: Thanks for mentioning the AVP. I called Christine Quinn's office last night at the suggestion of someone at the hospital.

A person from Quinn's office asked us to call the AVP. I called them last night and they were helpful.
Quinn??? The mayor should be in on this. How dare this happen in NYC.

It's not like you were on the G train at 3 AM in the morning -- you were on a crowded, major Manhattan subway at 6:30 PM. Is any one safe on the subways? Why doen't the MTA have video surveillance footage to get that thug arrested? The MTA just increased subway fares and you might be less safe riding the subway than before. If this thug does not get arrested, he will probably do it again.

Yeah, but Quinn is a big ol' out lesbian. I can see why the OP approached her office.

From the AVP's most recent statistics on reported antigay hate crimes: http://avp.org/publications/media/20080520NCAVP_HV.html
NCAVP’s 2007 report noted an alarming 24% increase in total number of victims reporting incidents of anti-LGBT violence (from 1,954 to 2,430). The number of incidents of anti-LGBT violence rose from 1,486 in 2006 to 1,833 in 2007 (+23%), based on reporting from the exact same reporting regions as the year prior...

    (snip)

Additionally, 2007 had the third highest murder rate in the past 10 years that NCAVP has been compiling the Hate Violence Report (see chart of known anti-LGBT murders in the U.S. since 1997 below) with murders more than doubling (from 10 in 2006 to 21 in 2007). LGBT people also reported a 61% increase in sexual assaults perpetrated as hate crimes...

    (snip)

Encouragingly, regions reporting decreases in numbers of victims in 2007 include New York City with 82 fewer victims than in 2006 (-14%) and Colorado (-27%), which received 45 fewer reports.
Notwithstanding the overall increase, Avy Skolnik, National Programs Coordinator at the New York City Anti-Violence Project cautions that the number of violent anti-LGBT incidents is likely even higher. “We know that the 2,430 people who called on our organizations in 2007 are only a small fraction of the actual number of LGBT people who experienced bias-motivated violence,” said Skolnik. “Anecdotally, we constantly hear stories of LGBT people surviving abuse - sometimes multiple attacks per day when that violence comes from a fellow student, a neighbor, a co-worker, a landlord, or a boss.”
So while it's down from the previous year, there were still almost 2,500 reports of anti-gay violence in NYC in one year.

What happened to the OP is indeed shocking. But this stuff does happen EVERY day, even here.
  • on a related and upsetting note, somehow i'd missed this story, about a group of women who protected themselves from a violent basher and then got sent to prison.
  • Subject: Attacked: onlookers

What is most shocking is that it was a crowded train!

And that someone didnt stop him. What is that about?... It sounds like the onlookers just looked.

I have several friends attacked racially in the city, in front of Asian restaurants, while the patrons just looked and did nothing.

Hey, I am home from work again today, but feeling better. Thanks so much for your support on here.

If you see the guy with all the black eyes buying up all the Tylenol in Prospect Hts, you'll know its me.

Speaker Quinn's office is very helpful and I'm meeting with the AVP today.

I am hoping we I can find people who were on that train, in that car or someone who spoke to the conductor. There was a woman or maybe two woman who brought me my shoes and my glasses and sat with me on the bench on the platform. I really want to thank them and see if they have any more information about what happened.
  • Christine Quinn seeks witnesses to attack on gay couple

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn called Thursday for witnesses to come forward and help police solve a bias attack on a gay couple.

A gay man who had just finished volunteering at a West Village church was riding the No. 1 train Saturday evening with his partner when a man and a woman harassed them, officials said.

The attackers shoved the men and used anti-gay slurs before running off the train, officials said. The incident, which occurred the night before the city's annual gay pride parade, is being investigated by the NYPD's hate crimes unit.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.

That was an ugly one . . . queer people of color often don’t receive justice in news coverage, even in the rare incidents where they receive it in the courts. A few weeks ago that woman's conviction was overturned, but she'd already spent a year in prison...

Yesterday legal justice was served in the case of two of seven lesbians to be convicted in relation to an August 2006 incident, where some of them fought back against a man who made unwanted advances and announced his belief that he should “fuck (the lesbians) all straight.” You may recall this case from stories with such flashy titles as “Attack of the Killer Lesbians.” And use of the term a “wolf pack of lesbians.” Here’s a slightly more balanced article from that time: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/15/nyregion/15attack.html?ei=5099&en=37a288263f3c8c71&ex=1182571200&partner=TOPIXNEWS&pagewanted=all

Terrain Dandridge, who has been in prison for almost a year due to the incident, is now set to walk free on Monday. The appeals court reversed her conviction and threw out the indictment. This is huge. The legal translation is that she basically shouldn’t have stood trial in the first place. This victory implicitly recognizes that Terrain was prosecuted and convicted for no other reason than that she was part of the group of young black lesbians who were wrongly and repeatedly pegged a "gang" at trial and in the media, even though all the evidence showed that they were just a group of queer young people of color who came from Newark, New Jersey, to hang out in the West Village, an environment that they had perceived was safe for them. Terrain’s co-defendant, Renata Hill, also had her conviction reversed and is to get a new trial on the gang assault charge.

It's good that the media reports this stuff -- as nasty as it is.

Too bad they don't live in Florida. They could of shot the man 20 times in the face and successfully argued that they were defending themselves.

Carrying a legal gun. The biggest you can get...and blowing a hole through that mindless meat not appeal to you?

Violence, like French, is a language.
Blow a hole through them...and they will think twice about doing that again. If there is an again.

Forgive me dear reader...but I hate innocents being attacked. It is unspeakable ad deplorable.

you might think that violence is not the way of a progressive and intelligent person. I can sadly assure you that it will work better then a social worker giving a lecture on how we all need to live together.

  • I'm still re-reading run (I have hit a stopping point when they're hooked back up with the u street gang in dirty city and can't reinvigorate - want to just ... skip) so I won't argue with you on that. however. an inexperienced gun user is more likely to be shot with their own gun in an illegal act than they are to actually shoot their accosters. oof.

what am I doing up so early?
  • Extend arm.
    Flatten palm outwards.
    Thrust straight upwards.
    Break nose.

Just read about this and I'm fuming. Glad to hear at least someone got off their ass and helped you on the platform. People is this city are real quick with the blinders sometimes, it's disheartening.

    Interesting.

I know some one who legally owned a gun that got stolen by crooks during a break in.

    Interesting.

I know some one who legally owned a gun that got stolen by crooks during a break in.
Very common. In AZ, everyone and their little brother had a handgun. Very few seem to be responsible gun owners. I figured I'd get one for myself at one point. I took several law enforcement gun classes at the local community college, they were open to everyone, although 90%+ of the students were cops or cadets. I learned a lot of interesting things, among which was the stat that if you own a gun it is FAR more likely to be used to harm a member of your own family, whether mistaking a sneaking in teenager for a crook or suicide, an accident or whatever, than it is to do used in defending oneself or one's family. *shrug* I hope the gunowners we have here are responsible. I decided against having one.

And a close friend's husband accidentally killed himself years back in a cleaning accident. It is easy to write such a thing off to him being not careful enough, not knowing what he was doing, etc. The man was a veteran of the armed forces though, and knew quite a lot about guns. It only takes a single lapse. I'll take my (and my family's) chances without one.

Did you really expect there to be? The only time the police are in the subways is to hide from actually doing work up above where chaos reigns supreme!
