  • This "cheaper" iPhone keeps getting more expensive every time I google it. The total cost of ownership over a 2-year contract is about $200 more than what you would pay for the original iPhone. Now I hear they want $15 a month for Exchange server access, so that's another $360 over the course of 2 years.
  • I'm planning on it as I'm just about done with my TMo contract. That said, I'm going to wait a few weeks to make sure there are no huge product defects and that AT&T handles the switch properly (as they were overwhelmed last time the iPhone launched)
  • I was going to get a white one...then this really rare limited edition folding bike popped up on craigslist. Oh, well. I'll have to wait a while. Anyhoo, I need to figure out if I can use my husband's upgrade credit on our family plan and then put my sim card in it. Its $200 less if you are eligible for an upgrade.

That's true. However you are getting something for your money. (muuuuuch better internet). So at least you're not paying more per month for the same thing.

In related news, I got the old iPhone this year so I'll be waiting a while to get the new one.

It's all about what color case you're going to get. It covers most of the phone anyway.
  • well. considering the amt of traveling I'm planning to do plus to start a biz, I need a GSM phone that's tricked out. and blackberries give me flashbacks. can't deal. so. iPhone, here I come!

BG: is white or black a better background for the cases??

Depends on the case color! we don't want to clash now do we?
  • Clash? They live together in perfect harmony.

  • my boyfriend is buying one of these which makes me excited because he's giving me his current iphone. Just in the nick of time, too, as my current razr pos isnt holding a charge anymore. Friday can't come soon enough...

I'm a bit worried about how im going to transfer all my into from my razr to the iphone- has anyone gotten a used iphone before and moved their data? Do I have to pay AT&T to do this? That's going to be irritating.
  • I'm admittedly lazy - what's the email story with the iPhones? Do they have any kind of push/PC email client sync, or do they just have a standalone email app that checks every few minutes?

Since moving to Vista 64, my Treo has become almost useless on the email front - I don't want to pay for Outlook (I already have the rest of the suite, but the bundle w/Outlook added a couple hundred to the price tag) and the Sprint software doesn't sync with Windows Mail...

From what I understand, you can just do pop for free, or pay $15 extra for exchange.

    From att's site:

similar issue on my end, cept I gotz a kzr and am already on at&t
  • my old iphone was stolen a few months ago (after owning it for only about 2 months, luckily my CC gave me a refund), so i decided to wait out for this second generation iphone patiently. i definitely would love to get one, not on the first day of course, but the att plan kinda turned me off. i would still love to be able to buy one (without signing contract and use it on my tmobile. i know they offer the no-commitment iphone with ridiculous price, but i dont think i want to pay that much. having a dilemma right now, lol.

anyway, all the att peeps, how do you like att?
  • I love at&t. except when I'm deep deep underground (basements, the subway) I get reception. plus I travel a lot and also plan to do a ton of traveling in the near future so GSM is critical for me. (no offense to folks on cdma networks - enjoy your brain cancer while you get calls in the subway) I used to have t mobile and at&t is WAY better. way better. like. there's coverage. but I hear, in terms of GSM, t mobile is better in states like hawaii. not sure why.

but heck, I quit my job before last on an at&t phone in otavalo ecuador and then called a friend from a mountain-top my parents eventually bought 20 minutes north of otavalo to tell them the good news. so. the hardware is good and at&t has cut a deal with just about everyone for coverage.
  • I also have AT&T (actually I used to have cingular, same dif) and have been pleased overall with their service. Plus, my family and I have had 4+ lines with them since 1998 so they kind of kiss our asses on a lot of things (ie- i racked up $200 in incoming international text message charges when my stupid cousin from overseas was here and called them crying and they took them off even though its my fault.)

I do wish my plan wasn't $100 though.
  • Yeah, AT&T has been good for me. I have a Cingular plan from about 4 years ago before they started making you get two lines at full price before getting any at $9.99. So instead of two $69 lines and a $9.99 line, I have on $69 line and two $9.99 lines. Three phone lines for about $115-120 a month combined with taxes and whatnot. You can't beat that.

Edit: HA! Nevermind. Of course, now they've changed it, so that its cheaper than my plan. Time to go call AT&T...
  • oh wow. where is your current avatar shot? looks like red rock or something??
  • I've had AT&T and Cingular forever. I have no complaints. They have good service in NYC, and decent service throughout the Northeast.
  • alafairnadia wrote: oh wow. where is your current avatar shot? looks like red rock or something??
Bryce Canyon, actually. I finally got to go back after more than ten years. Have you been? If you like national parks, its a great one.

Oh, on an iphone note--while I was on the phone with AT&T today, they said if you ever want to use it under another number after activating it once, you have to have it reactivated. I wonder what the "activation fee" will be for these things. I'm trying to save money on it by buying with my husband's upgrade credit (saves $200) and then reactivating it with my number.
  • where the heck is bryce canyon?

and they're charging to activate active numbers?!?1
  • only one more day until the second coming.
  • alafairnadia wrote: where the heck is bryce canyon?

Its in southern Utah, a half day trip from Vegas. ;) There's a whole string of cool national parks down there. All in one go we went to Kolob Canyon, Cedar Breaks, Bryce Canyon, Red Canyon, Escalante Canyon, Capitol Reef, and Zion National Park. What can I say? I like climbing around on rocks.

Well, the woman I spoke to first was telling me that you can't remove the sim card in this iphone (but I think they tried to tell everyone that last time). I asked if I wanted to switch it to my number, and at first she was trying to say you just can't do that. So I was like, "You mean once its associated with a number, you can never use it with another number? People are going to be mad about that." Then, she finally relented and said that you'd have to re-activate it (you had to do this with the first iphone as well, from what I read). I didn't think to ask if there is a specific amount, but every time I've ever gotten a phone from AT&T there has been a $80 activation charge.

    But, we'll see...
  • i was told it would be aroud $20 to buy a new sim for the iphone. You CAN remove the SIM in an iphone but they have special ones so you cant put a regular one in.

Hopefully they don't charge $20 plus activation! I'm crossing my fingers for just the $20.
  • Im going to throw a tantrum if they charge me $100 to get the damn phone turned on. there's no reason for that.
  • For everyone with the 1st gen iPhone, the new firmware made a early debut. You can find it by going to just about any mac rumor site. Its a pretty easy manual install. I'm running it, plus a few apps from the app store.
  • I'm looking forward to getting the new firmware. I want games games games!
  • Here's a good running list of new iPhone apps
  • As the reports come in:

Well, ATT has already lied to me once. They said you can't eject the sim--Not true.

So we shall see about the "activation" thing.
