New Mexican Restaurant on Washington

I saw it too - mgr or someone was there as I walked by and he said they'd be opening today or tomorrow hopefully. I got a menu. They're also delivering!
-
What cross street is that at? I've heard good things, but never tried Udom. And an 'authentic' mexican rest. that delivers is certainly worth a shot in my book.
-
St. Marks...
they deliver... awesome!!
I don't think they are opening today... but I'll definitely stop by tomorrow
-
-
I am pretty sure they opened today, i went to eat lunch at Gen and saw that Los Muertos had their Grand Opening sign, so i think they are open. Also the Pakistani Pizzeria on Washington almost on the corner of Bergen seems like they closed down. But they might be on vacation, but i doubt it. So i might try los Muertos tomorrow. If anyone goes there tonight let us know!

What's the difference between new Mexican and just regular Mexican?
-
Udon sucks, i was excited that a new Thai was opening up, but its just another crappy Thai restaurant, the Pad Thai i got there a couple of weeks ago was the most fucking disgusting thing i have eaten in a while. It´s just like Mango or the place on Fulton , just bad food. For good Thai i rather go into China town or into Queens, maybe Chinatown in Sunset Park or even better NYoNya Malaysian restaurant on Grand in the city.

Typical sneaky response. No response. ](*,) :sign-offtopic: :drunken:

Once a new Mexican restaurant is open for a week, it become regular Mexican.
There is a difference btwn New Mexican cuisine and Mexican cuisine....but I think in this case it's just a matter of title confusion. -

Nyonya also has a branch in Sunset Park.
This new Mexican place is going to have to be pretty good to compete with Chavella's. -
They have nachos on the menu. Just like Mamacita used to make.
-
I hope they're not pile nachos. I love individual pretteh.
-
Usual response, yes indeed. But i think i am right on this one, i lived with a Chef for 4 years, my palate got a bit snobby while i was with her. But i don't think that i am exaggerating when i say that Udon is not what i expected it to be. Thai lagoon used to be the shit, Lemon Grass has decent food, i am a fan on Joya and Song but lately have notice that almost every dish is overtly salty or is it msg? I miss the Cambodian restaurant in Fort Greene, used to be good. Now i go to the Malaysian restaurant on Atlantic not too shabby, but pretty empty. Now i only eat in China town , worth the trip, cheap and always fresh ingredients
Regarding Mexican food, i know a thing or 2. In the last 3 years i have spent 5 months in Mexico, also one of the Sneaky's ex girlfriend's is a Mexican food chef, so i am very picky of the places that i like and i have no fucking prejudice to whom i like and whom i do not. A few years ago, like 5 or 6, i started going to Taqueria DF on 5th Avenue and 23rd or 24th street, it was a little whole on the wall, no place to sit, just a counter, a salad bar where you had about 5 kinds of Sauces, fresh lime wedges, nopal salad and other things that i can't remember, it was strictly Tacos and chicken. The tacos were a dollar each, i would eat 5 of those and it was heaven, they really marinated their, chicken and beef, don't know about the pork, since i do not consume it, the goat was pretty good, even the Cesos on the menu. Then it started doing extremely popular with the Yuppies and Hipsters, then they hiked up the prices and expanded and now it really sucks. Now i have eaten at almost every Mexican place around this side of Brooklyn, from Rancho alegre, Pequena, Bonita, La taqueria , Chavella's and Burrito Ville, Santa Fe i do not call Mexican. Every one of these places have them same fundamental flaw, even though they have Mexican's in their kitchen and all of them pride themselves in being Authentic Mexican places and having the Freshest ingredients, specially the ones in Fort Greene all of them seemed to have forgotten to actually marinate their meats, flavorless taco's, enchilada's, quesadillas are a sham, try eating the Flautas from any of these places and you will find that nothing has any flavor, just deep fried chicken, the toppings fare no better, everything has iceberg lettuce, every single dish is accompanied with the same beans and rice, order 3 main courses and you will have beans to last you for a week, Chavella's has the Mole enchilada's which i liked till i realized that something was a bit off. The mole i later found out came from a can, so to me its all about everyone of these places not actually taking the extra step and trying to make their food taste better and Authentic. It seems that we have to go to the underground restaurants in Sunset Park's Bodega's back room's or to the Panaderia's to get a decent steak Tortaand to find tasty authentic Mexican. Or go high end, not too long ago i had an amazing meal at Papatzuli's on Grand Street in Soho, if you want to to spend more and actually taste innovative but traditional food go there, fuck even Rosa Mexicana impressed me, i went there last Wednesday and was surprise at the quality of their ingredients, the fresh Guacamole made to order was fucking amazing and mind me, i fucking hate Avocado's, not a fan of Dos Camino's. The other place i fucking think is amazing and not too expensive is on Elizabeth between Spring and Delancey, you go down the stairs non pretentious, La Esquina upstairs, not the club has fucking amazing Tinga and Barbacoa taco's even though they are 4 bucks its worth the try. I have seen Los Muertos Menu, its pretty extensive, i hope that they actually do a good job, but sometimes more on a Menu is less quality when they deliver the food. The prices are more than reasonable compared to La Taqueria and Burrito Ville. I might be a food snob but for a reason. I just came from China town, had a sesame pan cake filled with Peking duck, vegetable Dumplings and a spicy cucumber salad, it only cost 5 buck and every time i eat there, i come out with a smile and satisfied. Its not about being a snob, i have been to expensive posh places where the food was shit, Peasant, Freeman's etc. Just because you are cheap and in the hood does not mean its good, i guess everyone has different taste buds, but i hope this won't be a place that won't disappoint. Remember Mexican food is labor extensive, fresh mole takes a while, meats need to marinate, and takes loads of love but in the end your food will taste amazing and people will comeback for more and more.
Sorry EC!!

Mai is Malaysian??? WTF Sneaky. This is a typical, ie mediocre, SE Asian restaurant. Vietnamese, if anything is the predominant cuisine. Maybe one or two Malaysian dishes. Boo to you, sir, for getting my hopes up.
-
Ok, so i guess there has to be rules and guidelines. I think i will be able to host it at my place, right now i just moved to another apartment on the same street, will be here till September and then moving to another joint. Maybe the last week of August??
Nice Shorts !!

MOD note: split this Enchilada thread to it's own awesomeness, as it doesn't really have anything to do with the restaurant -
So, has anyone actually tried Los Muertos? They slipped their menu under the door of my co-op this week.
-
Yowza, that was long! and still no info about the actual restaurant Los Muertes! I am definitely kinda with Sneaky on the Mexican food thing, better in Sunset Park, even better in Jackson Heights, but...it's kind of hard to take advice from someone who likes Joya/Song (same diff). That is NOT Thai food. Not by a long shot. Get yosself to Elmhurst or Woodside!

Subject: Try Los Muertos
Just a shout out to say, YES, I have tried the place and am freakin' thrilled to have tasty tacos and burritos in a pretty darn cool setting. oh, and the price is right. I wonder if "new Mexican" is kinda like Baja, either way, it's basically clean (ie. not lard filled) food. I talked to the owner and it's walk-up counter service, but on the weekends it's wait-service for brunch. I think eventually it will be waitstaff once there's enough traffic. Try the fish tacos, they're tasty, especially if you squeeze some lime over it. -
My wife and I tried Taqueria de Los Muertos last night and found it a pleasant experience. The restaurant is cafeteria-style, where you place your orders at the counter and then carry them to your table. We ate the maiz chanclado (grilled corn covered with chipoltle mayo and cheese), beef taco, and fish tostadas with mahi mahi. Everything was delicious and the service was friendly and prompt. The food was served on attractive, brightly-colored plates. While we were there, a steady stream of customers came in, some to stay, others to take out.
While I sympathize with those stressing "authenticity", sometimes it's nice to have a meal in the neighborhood after a long week of work. On those days, riding the subway for 45 minutes just ain't gonna happen. -
What kind of fish tacos? Baja-style? Had the fish taco at Chavella's, which was tasty but not really what I hoped for. Looking forward to trying it out...
-
it sounds very chavella's-similar. hrm. wonder if that'll work for them.
-
i'm pretty psyched that both chavella's and los muertos are around, and think they'll both survive on their own merits. i go to chavella's mostly to sit down and be waited on - i think it's super cute and super fresh and fun to bring friends to. los muertos is practically across the street from me and i'm pretty happy to have japanese, thai, and mexican super easy to take out for a night in!
-
average. guac not ... worth it.
-
Will try it later tonight for dinner, will probably take Ex Mrs Sneaky and Baby Sneaky they just got in from Europe on Friday. Just got home, both are passed out on the couch and its really cute. The Sneaky baby is so tanned and blond its amazing, 6:13 am, maybe i will go for brunch but then again i hate eggs. Anyhow lets figure this Throw down soon!!
Ya no me disculpare para nada! -
They have brunch? Is the brunch cafeteria-style too?
-
From what the owner told me they will have table service for brunch only, might go and check it out in a little while and take the Sneaky baby for some Huevos Rancheros but then again it might not be a good idea, last time i ate Huevos Rancheros it did not go so well.
HAHAH
