gay night in the nabe - ripple

It was largely an evolution from this incident and discussion:
http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=43787 -- not a ripple homophobic event.
I think it's a great idea, and bet a lot of people would show through word of mouth alone. I would say though re: the safety discussion, maybe we should take labor day off.. I bet everyone will be tired out from the straight pride parade anyway.
if you haven't seen that thread:

I'm thinking of something where songs like this are totally appropriate so I can dance around with my appropriately jacked coke:@import url(http://skreemr.com/styles/embed.css);

best song ever.
"... let me pacific, I wanna be down in your south seas, but I got this notion that the motion of your ocean meets small craft advisories"
beats any pickup line i've ever used. -

good idea. thanks! -
Far be it for me to jump in with a contrary point, but here goes...
Why does it seem like we are already presuming there is going to be some anti-gay tension around this night before it even gets organized? I've lived in this neighborhood a while now... certainly before it started attracting a lot of gay folks, and I have never had a problem here. I am very out, very visibly gay, and not for a minute have I had anyone in this neighborhood make me feel like that was an issue. But its also not an issue for me. I don't walk around expecting people to react to me as being abnormal because I am normal. And people here have been very welcoming. Its not that they pretend I'm not gay, they just don't seem to care much about it one way or the other.
Listen, if you want to go into this gay night and already have your hackles up and expect some kind of confrontation, you will get it, no doubt. No offense to pinkmuppet, but you definitely fueled a confrontation that you could just as easily chaulked up to one idiot in a group. If gay night is going to be about safety planning routes home and all this other scared, reactive tension, you aren't giving the chance for the neighborhood and the people in it to not really give a shit. Maybe if you don't make it such a tense moment it will be seen as a chance to bring revenue into a neighborhood establishment, exactly as it is, with no interest in forcing it out for a new starbucks or tapas bar.
until we stop making such a big deal out of this, its going to be a big deal and the energy that gets put out there comes back the same way. this neighborhood is full of good people... including some of the longtimers... who are willing to befriend and welcome people too... its all in how you put yourself out there.
my 2 cents. -
I concur with Jayce. I don't think any extra safety precautions should be taken except for basic things that you would take wherever you hang out at. To be honest, how would people know that Ripple is having a gay night anyway unless they are a patron of the bar? I seriously doubt you will have people lurking around outside to see who enters and leaves the bar. The only day that may be of some concern is Labor Day itself where you will have a lot of people from all over converging in the neighborhood and people will have been partying the whole weekend. If trouble occurs it would probably be from people outside the neighborhood since Prospect Heights is the end of the parade and where a lot of the partying goes on at. Anyway, before I can comment any further I must ask where is Ripple and how is it? I am just beginning to know about all these places in the nabe from you Brooklynians and each place has been great.

ripple is a fab place on washington between st. johns and sterling. I'm glad people are helping me feel better about the safety thing. I mean, I want to give this a shot and see wtf happens, no? I hope people come and fun. that's about it ... I'll be the perfect "hostess", I swear. except I'm not hitting white castle. that joint is nuts late at night.
-
I'm glad that the chir'n of the 'family" are enthusied about the idea. The quality of the music will be very important to drawing the folks out on a regular basis.
Remember Sugarbabies on Monday nights in the EV? A great mix of peeps and slamming music. -
I loved Sugarbabies!!! That was one of my favorite places to go. I really liked how they had the live drummer adding beats over the dance music. New York really needs a place with that kind of energy again.

was it a house music type thing? I've seen that at a few places but not often (and sometimes that kind of house is just too tribal for me). while I don't think they're gay focused, they're definitely welcoming. -
It was house music and the drummer's name is Animal. I just was hanging with him last night. Anyhow, I think a mixture of house/dance/lounge/moody music makes for great atmosphere. A local dj: Bill Coleman is great for that type of atmosphere

ah cool. I went to a night in SF like that a few years ago with a gay male couple who turned out to want a third (female). cute enough but if the music sounds anything like that night I have scary flashbacks.

Oh dear "clutching the pearls"! You are many things!

If Ripple doesn't workout... what about Sepia?
-
From what I remember ( this was like 15 years ago and I was wasted most the time) but the music at Sugarbabies was bouncy and fun. It wasn't scary at all. Save the Robots was scary. But, getting back to Ripple, I'm excited to hear of a new gay night in the area. There are so many gays here, and there are only like 3 gay bars in Brooklyn. It'll be nice to have another option.
-
Sepia would be cool. The owners are amazing.
-
also... I see tons of queer people (especially younger queer people) around the neighborhood and wonder why we don't get together and talk. The bar sounds great.. we all love fun, but what about organizing and chatting about local issues?
I guess that has been my frustration with this entire forum... everyone has an opinion online but who gets together in reality to make a difference? It feels a little self-defeating to me. If we want a community... we need to come together as one face to face. -
okay guys, I've failed at tracking down the main owner so I'm just emailing the guy whose email I got and hope he passes the message along. main owner is 'off' on wed & thurs and I was going to pop in last night after cattyshack poker night but I got roped into dancing to sublime and shots of jamesons and ... well. I don't quite recall arriving home. god I love having bartender friends. anyway. point being, that was my goal for this week but I failed with a PH so beh. let me email the other owner whose info I got and see if I can get this shit settled for say ... next monday? if not, I can also harass delissa at sepia. I was one of her first customers after she opened so she'd probably be cool. she's just not lacking for customers, if you catch my drift, and the dudes at ripple have been my helpers for years.

I'm with you 100%. that's why I love this forum - going to the happy hours/events means that I have met a bunch of folks in the neighborhood that I might have never met otherwise. it was someone's post in another thread that lead me to get this started: why not have a fun time for queers, too? and their friends, obviously. it'd be great to all know each other - you run into someone stumbling home late, you can help get them there. you might meet a hottie if you're single. whatever. it's cool. I run into tons of folks I met through the forum all over here - it's awesome. I'm hoping to at least bring that level of awesome to the queer community, both for the queers and for the friends.

okay. spoke with primary owner syron. he's in. so. wednesday night, however often we want. so ... what are folks in to? once a month to start? they have an ipod kinda driven system (and turntables) but I'm not interested in paying a DJ. so lets just do playlists?
and I think we need some sort of promo something. maybe a myspace page? (god, wtf am I getting myself into?) and graphics. and er. I don't do graphics.
so. um. PM me?? please?? reply to this thread? helps! the nabe is IN! -
i could just stand outside with my big scurry dog and protect peeps and be gay too!!
i know im jumping back in after months of relative silence but why not just call it something un-gay related and just have it.
people will start to hear about it by word of mouth then everyone gets to keep their dignity.
I live a 1/2 block from there and i can't say for sure that *nothing* would happen and i know that it makes a difference that im a girl and everyone knows that we are not threatening (sarcasm) but still. We live in NYC in 2008. the idea of having some sort of 'code name' makes me feel horrible and like i live in some backwoods town where the only gay bar for 100 miles is in a strip mall
sorry. isnt there anything else it could be called?
ill think about what in the meantime. -
well, what's weird is that it appears ripple is closed again! I can't figure them out. oh well.
-
hmm i noticed that and thought maybe they were back open.
give it a week they will be open again. -
yeah. it'll either re-open or when I get back from ecuador, I'll figure out a different venue. *shrug*
-
let me know if i can help!
-
thanks! I may approach sepia, next, if ripple doesn't reopen. like many businesses in the nabe, this is prime "vacation" time. but the last few times I've seen them open, the gate has been half way down. and this last week and a half or so, they've just been closed.
-
What is their deal, really?!!? Be open or don't be open! Sheesh...
-
it's very odd. doesn't seem to be a "choice". like. they get shut down, or they can't afford to get a new bottle of jack til they sell out the old one, etc.
