Christie's closed!
Subject: Christie's closed!
Last night I arrived back in NYC after 2 weeks away. I went for a quick walk, at the end of which I decided that I wanted a coco bread to go with dinner. Walking toward Christie's at 7PM, I noticed that their gate was down and signs were up in the windows. Heart sinking, I walked up and read one of the signs: on vacation from 7/14-7/21, opening again on 7/22.I damned near had a heart attack. Meat Vent's DOH'ed and Christie's is closed for vacation? What in the hell do I do for my weekend lunches?!?

Joyce is also closed for vacation, until the 22nd.

Great! What am I supposed to do for sustenance now?

Where is Christie's? What kinda food does it sell?

Joyce's closes when it rains.

On the East side of Flatbush, just towards the Plaza from Sterling. They used to be on the opposite corner, beneath Crunch.
They sell Jamaican patties (vegetable, chicken, and beef), coco bread, mac and cheese, ox-tail soup, and other Jamaican stuff. I've eaten some of those other things, and they're pretty much indulgences, but for a cheap snack, those veggie patties are pretty great. -
how do we survive? it's almost time for tom's to go on vacay, too. OH NO. (actually, pretty funny to watch the bklyn tourists spaz about it)

I ended up walking past there yesterday on my way to pick up some mail at the old place and people were really pissed about the closing. (Myself included because I had walked out of the way for a beef pattie...) A lot of "omigod they're closed down?" and such, but there was a collective sigh of relief when everyone saw the vacation signs.

why does every restaurant do this vacay thing in july/aug? it's like all of them closing on monday. annoying.

I suppose the residents of Prospect Heights would know this a hell of a lot more than this Sloper, but there's that veggie caribbean place on Washington whose name escapes me which makes a mean fake meat patty.
I do love me some Christie's, though. mmm mmm mmm. patty on coco bread is the best lunch deal in town. -
wait. not the one next to ripple, right? cause that patty was kinda grody. which one do you order?

it's like a juice bar place. the patties looked bright firggin red, but tasted gerat. maybe the place is nasty, but i'm judging it on only one visit.
Working on Fulton and New York Ave., you'd think I could find a good patty, but no. I've got a Golden Krust (in other words, a McPatty), and Tastee Pattee (waaaay overdone), and that's it. -
the juice bar? I think that's the place on washington almost at st. john's right? and damn, you should be able to get hooked up with fantastic curry goat, not just a patty there! (do you ever think about how similar carib places are re: the little glass cases of patties ... or pastelitos and the hearty rice, beans and meat yumo?)

I wonder if maybe you're thinking of Healthy Nibbles on Flatbush at Prospect? They specialize in meatless patties, and their "vegan chicken" patty is actually tasty. -
I nearly fainted when i saw Christies all gated up on Monday as well.
Boy, was I relieved to see the vacation sign.
Christies has THE BEST beef and chicken patties I have ever tasted. And the coco bread. OH LORDIE!! Not such a fan of the veggie patties though. -
jeez man. you have got to be more specific in the thread title. now i have to spend the next hour cleaning the floor onto which i just spilled my bowels. if christies closed i would be so so sad. their patty and coco bread is my all time favorite filling and delicious meal for under 3 bucks.

it is awesome. I had a truly wonderful meal there with a friend - two diet cokes and we each had the patty with coco bread and there was a handy bottle of hot sauce. sadly, last time I saw her (she's not dead (as far as I know) just vanished) but still, wonderful meal and a definite show in how easy cheap & simple can be satisfying.
