New Coffee shop on Washington

if correct, this will be a welcome addition to the nabe.
-
I'm really hoping this is true. That would be such an awesome add, as alafairnadia said. And with 10 'Bucks closing in the city we can use a few more independent coffee houses! ;-)

Has the muddy waters chick somehow got it together? I recall the note on her shuddered business on Vanderbilt—"look for us on Washington Ave in 2008." I saw it as a threat to the fabric of the community.

OH MY FREAKING GOD I HOPE NOT!
-
NO NO NO NO NO. it CAN'T be her. she's the debil.
-
since no one can confirm it, I reckon I may have been premature in creating mass hysteria...i guess we must wait and see....
but with two failed businesses in less than a year, with both locations bearing the mark—a giant post-it note of sorts—of the Sheriff seizing the properties, I cannot imagine that anyone of sound mind would back her biz/offer her a lease. -
Sorry, I don't know the history...what was her other business?
-
Coffee shop from Hell!!

The Chocolate Monkey/Well Lounge
Muddy Waters -
Let's just pray to the coffee gods for a nice coffee shop, one that serves at least good coffee
-
Crap. That would be the death of a dream.

Was she nasty, the coffee nasty, or both combined? I went to MW only once--and a quick visit at that, so I never got the whole effect.
Is this in the fried-chicken space on the east side of Wash? If so, they still have a lot of work ahead. -
i want the fried chicken back. in fact, I want some now.

I heard that Starbucks was interested and in legitimate discussions for the space but the landlord was such a pain in the ass that they decided against it.
-
starbucks, man, give it up and go back to seattle already!

I don't want to turn this thread into a Starbucks-is-the-devil debate, but I'm wondering if either Vanderbilt and Washington are chain-worthy yet. One of their appeals to me is that they don't have a lot of chain outlets. I hope that they stay that way, but I think that the presence of a chain or two is inevitable. -
If given the choice between a Starbuck or another hair salon on Washington, which would you choose?

I didn't know there were that many heads in Brooklyn to supply that kind of demand! The number of hair salons boggles my mind....and on FRANKLIN?!?! It's nuts over there with salons... -

I know, it's crazy! I'm thinking, though, that I should try the "hair spa". -
there are 4 or 5, I think, hair salons and barber shops IN A ROW on washington btwn park & prospect. it's absurd.

Seriously! How are they bringing in enough customers?!?! and how are there ALWAYS new ones and yet the old ones don't seem to go out of business?!?!?!
My mind! It boggles! -

Here's my theory: I once had a roommate who did the whole "salon" thing. First of all, it was a complete Saturday afternoon. I think that she got the scoop on everyone at the salon, their friends, their relatives, who's-dating-whom, etc., etc. Oh yeah, and she got her hair done (and it always looked amazing). It was as much a social outlet for everyone there as it was a haircut. So, if those five chairs in the salon turn over twice in a day, that's only 10 people. As the population of PH increases, so do the need for more salons. If the old ones already have an established clientele that isn't leaving, it creates the need for new ones.
My mind! It boggles!
Still, the Hair Spa: I wonder if they do pedis. -
I don't know about you guys, but I keep a spare head just so I can get its hair done. Supporting local businesses, that's my gig.
-
BkChickie- that makes a lot of sense. So, its like 50 live versions of Beauty Shop, the movie....I get it.
-
ok so BKChickie, that makes sense... but during the week, I am sure these salons are empty...
i know I need a good pedi.. i usually go to Cure Beauty Bar over on Fulton but to have a closer place... I'd make the switch! -
Anyway, back to the coffee shop. I was lookin' in the windows at the former chicken place and it appears to be a total mess, but not the kind of mess that indicates that people are working in there; it's the other, neglect kind of pigsty.
But next door, between the chicken place and Rawstar, there's a teacup-size storefront that's been getting work done for a while now. Could that be the reported coffee shop? -
I hope that it's another Joyce kind of place.
Yes, the hair salon/barber thing boggles my mind too. We need some variety here! What sense does it make to open a business that is not needed. There is a huge opportunity on the main drags for a wide range of new business. I suppose the recession will slow progress here as well.
