Rockaway Beach?
Since it looks like it's easy to get there on the A train, I'd like to go tomorrow. But I know that some parts are strictly surf and while that's cool and all, I'd love to actually be able to swim in the ocean if I get too hot.
Does anyone know what would be the best part of the beach to go to for that?
Thanks!

I've only been to Riis Park which I think is A to Howard to the shuttle to Beach 116th St. to a bus to the park...but it's pretty, clean, you can swim (I think it is no guard/at own risk- or maybe after they go home?). Hope you enjoy it.
If you end up going to another portion of the beach, let me know how it is! I have a friend who works at the aquarium at Coney-so I've been going there and haven't branched out much this summer. -
Isn't the B-41 and the connecting bus to Riis Park the way to go? I thought the A's last stop was in Far Rockaway. Do people still go to Far Rockaway for the beach and/or swimming?

The bus that both idlewild and eat snacky smores are talking about is the same bus from different directions. It was the old green line which is now the Q35

Subject: BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE RIP TIDES AND THE UNDERTOW!!!
I have had friends who have lived in Rockaway, Rockaway Parkway and Neponsit.
Just be VERY CAREFUL of the water. If you ask residents around Rockaway they will tell you that the coastline is VERY uneven and will often have 100 foot drop offs in water that appears to be shallow. There are also big surf tides, rip tides and undertows that are VERY STRONG and are real dangerous to poor swimmers. The rip tides and the undertows there are NOTORIOUS to the residents who know about them. See the second link I gave you which is a link to a local paper. Even in the comments section of the Times articles I cited, you will see residents of the Rockaways discuss how dangerous those beaches are. Right now, the waters around NYC even at other beaches are kind scary! Have you seen how many recent deaths there have been?

That's the way I go. Then again, getting to the A train directly from where I live wasn't that convenient.
I believe you can transfer to a shuttle train that will terminate at Beach 116th Street.Do people still go to Far Rockaway for the beach and/or swimming?
Judging by the number of people I witnessed waiting for the Q35 with beach umbrellas and coolers this summer at the Junction, yes, people still head out to that beach.
I like Rockaway Beach better than the Brooklyn beaches (Coney Island especially), but it is a bit far and is basically a day trip.
