Sooooo.....is anyone interested in doing longer rides? And if so, where to?

  • The Sandy Hook thing is intriguing. Where does the ferry leave from?

Oh, and if we don't want to get on a train/ferry, the path to Reis Beach and Rockaway Beach is nice. About 15mi one way and mostly greenway.

But it would be cool to do something new (for me anyway).
  • Haven't done the Sandy Hook thing myself but I hear it's cool.
Ferry leaves from 34th street on the East side (and I'm sure elsewhere) and takes you there. Sandy Hook as such only has a 3 mile? 9 mile? bike path, and beaches. And we can then top it all off with some seafood. Or visit Bruce Springsteen, he loves close by supposedly...
  • The SeaStreak (ferry to Sandy Hook) is $45 r/t, plus I think they charge you $5 each way for bikes. So $55...kinda steep. We might be better off taking the LIRR to Jones Beach or something, if we want to do a beach ride. Prob costs less than half.

Other bike things to think about....

Starting this Saturday (and every Sat. in August) the city is closing off streets to make a bike/pedestrian route from the Brooklyn Bridge all the way up to Central Park. That could be a good start to an around-manhattan ride.

We could ride across the GW bridge into NJ and ride in the Palisades Park area. I've done that a bunch of times, it's nice.
  • Cool, I'm up for that also!

Yeah, I'm too broke for that.

That is a good idea. I think Whatchuwant mentioned this too on Saturday.

Other thought: Spuyten Duyvil looks really cool. Its only a couple stops on Metronorth. From the train I could see people riding in the woods.
  • sandy hook sounds cool :)
  • this all sounds too complex for the non-bikers. have fun, guys!
  • Hmm, I just mapped out the GW Bridge/Palisades Park trip I suggested earlier. I think we'd end up riding a bit more than 40 miles round trip. That's spandex bike short territory for me...which probably result in the end of any future ride invitations, and maybe even the revocation of my brooklynian account.

So before I scare anyone, maybe we should first decide on a distance for the next ride? Maybe we shoot for the 15-30 mile range? That'd be about 2+ hours of solid riding, plus whatever diversions we find along the way.

I'd lean towards the Riis Park ride (29 miles r/t).

Spuytin Duyvill sounds cool too, although we'd have to get rail passes for our bikes, I think. On the plus side, you can take the metronorth for $3 within city limits on weekends, if i recall correctly.
  • The bike ride discussions you guys have simultaneously make me want to run out, get a bike and meet you guys/join the ride if welcomed and run inside and hide because that is work-out/spandex territory indeed (and a bike I cannot afford yet).

You have ambitious ideas that distance/time aside all seem quite fun!

Even the mere mention of a trip that long may get you banned...

Whatdaya mean before you scare anyone!?!?! Dude...

Anything that includes a train ride is fine by me....cause I love trains....
  • Sounds like fun, but I'm not sure I'm that ambitious. I'd be much more into a 15 mile ride than a 30 mile one.

I actually had no idea about the bike pass, and when I brought mine on, no one mentioned anything. I guess it could have been because its a folder. But maybe they don't enforce the rule? Of course, if 8 of us showed up with bikes, I'm guessing they'd be more apt to.

The good thing is, it seems that once you buy the pass, its good forever.

All that said, I would still lean towards Riis beach. Really, I didn't even mean to end up there. I just wanted to ride a little further than Coney Island one day, and after 30 minutes, found myself there. Its not bad, I swear!

Plus, I saw cool stuff like this on my way:

  • Drano, when were you last at Riis beach?
  • I'm in for Riis beach ... it's a fun ride down Flatbush to the island. Lots of open road if you go early enough on a Sunday.

Here is an amazing site that might help:

Also, here's a version from Park Slope. Its basically our Coney Island trip + the greenway that runs along the Belt Parkway

  • Nice!

I just wish they would pave the greenway for Ocean Pkwy Too many bumps!
  • Has a day been picked out yet?

They did a big section recently =D>

Hopefully, they'll do the rest soon.
  • Did that section finally open? Thank goodness, cause I was dying to ride it. :) Yippie!

By the way, I saw some marks on Washington Avenue, looks like there might be another bike lane?
  • i do riis at least once each weekend. eastern pkway to bedford bike path to sheepshead bay/emmons ave to belt pkway bike path to flatbush, then over the bridge and to the end of riis, very multiculti and queer and topless at the far end. an hour each way at a leisurely pace. warning: bedford in the flatbush area can get intense car and human traffic wise. i often cut across to coney on the way back to avoid it and perimeter the park at ppsw/ppw.
  • As long as you know where you are going, we can follow :)

Can you please add Riis Beach to the poll options?

Yeah, that's why for a group trip I would say skip Bedford and use the Ocean Parkway greenway. I'm experienced enough now to do high traffic areas on my own, but for those who don't ride as often...
  • Let's hope that the cops don't body slam us:

  • Damn! Was the cop trying to get in his way? It sure looked like he picked out the biker as a target. That's a prime reason why I avoid critical mass like the plague.
  • So how about this Saturday?
  • The cop was put on desk duty pending investigation. I don't think cops are all bad... they do their job when needed. But this 1 cop totally lied about it and everything... check out the NY Times article.

So I'm just saying we have to be aware of the fact that if we ride around in a "mass" group... we may be a target.

This whole thing really pisses me off. Sorry about the off topic message... just want all to be aware that this happened 4 days ago.

That's cool with me. We should leave enough time so that we aren't riding back in the dark. Too sketchy on the belt parkway greenway at night.

I know, I thought about that the first time we rode, but only 10 max of us usually show up, and we aren't too imposing as a group ;)
  • I'm good with Saturday too. But I thought this was a morning thing?
  • That video makes me sick to my goddamn stomach.
