I'm hoping for morning too. With a little relaxing on the beach and stopping to eat it took me about 4 hours. So maybe we meet up at 10 or 11 am? Too early? -
I'm an early bird... so I'm good with 10 or before. 8) Looks like hot weather on Saturday too.

Yes, I will remember my sunscreen this time! Took me 3 weeks to peel after the burn I got last time. Ick! -
Ouch!
-
What do you think Christina? 10am?
-
I'm out of town this weekend so sadly, I'm out on this one guys.
-
Sure I can peel myself out of bed if I have to.

hehe. Yeah, I know there's no $4 fresh from the brewery beer involved, so its less motivating.
I think we could leave at noon and still be cool to get back in daylight. As always, I'm flexible to whatever works for y'all. -
That's a non-issue for me now, I cut all bad food influences off for 2 weeks (very boring).
12 pm may not be the most comfortable riding time however - too hot?
Either way, I'll survive, we'll go with the flow.
Mods, can you make this posting global puhlease! -
Uh, oh. Did some food get you? Or do you just do that occasionally? (I should learn some discipline and try)
Well, if you think you can make it at 10, I think we should go for it. Anyone else have a preference? Arches? -
I'm still trying to figure out if I can make it. We've got guests in town through Sunday....have to try to convince them that a 30 mile bike ride would be a great way to see NY! Only problem is, I have 3 bikes for 4 people. Anyone know anywhere around here to rent a bike?

Actually, when I was at On The Move buying something, I noticed people returning bikes they had rented. I think the rate was $30 a day, helmet included.
Oh, and I do have an extra full-size road bike for someone 5'8" - 6'2". The rate is $0, helmet included.

I'm totally down for a ride to Riis Park, as that's my old stomping ground (born & raised in Rockaways). I'll give ya'll a tour of all the exciting attractions.. ohh, ohh, and actually, there's a fun bar in Rockaway called Connelly's that's open for the summer, about a block from the beach.. they have a smallish outdoor area, but they're usually open all day during the summer and don't get too crowded (with kids, unfortunately) until later in the eve..
Oh, and if we don't want to get on a train/ferry, the path to Reis Beach and Rockaway Beach is nice. About 15mi one way and mostly greenway.
But it would be cool to do something new (for me anyway).
Also, there's a loop that goes along the Belt Parkway & through Rockaway & Broad Channel (the island in the middle of Jamaica Bay) that's about 14 miles long. Very nice, scenic, and mostly-safe ride.
I'm also down for any longer rides, maybe 30-40 miles or so. Like the ferry to Sandy Hook idea, or doing the loop around Manhattan. -
Yay! We have a guide! And outdoor drinking spot!
-
I can't do this weekend. After that, I'm up for a longer weekend ride.

semi-outdoor.
actually, if ya'll want a better outdoor place, there's one a bit closer to Riis Park, at 116th street. It's called The Wharf, and it's right on the water of the bay side of Rockaway Peninsula. There's a big ole wooden dock over the water, with picnic tables and a ramp leading down to a float (incase, ya know, anyone wants to arrive in their boat).
They also serve food, though it's nothing extraordinary (maybe a step or two above typical bar food), and almost exclusively non-veg.
Come to think of it, I think we should totally go to this place instead if we go to Rockaway. We'll stick out like motherfuckers since it's a very local place, but it'll be fun.

Either sounds good. I'm cool with leaving it up to your Rockaway radar while we're on-site.

Oooooh, that isssss sexy! Thanks much for the offer. I'll keep you guys posted if I can make it. I'm putting the chances at 50/50 at this point.
Oh, and I'm looking to order a few replacement parts for my bike...if anyone wants to tack on an order for lights (or anything else, i guess), let me know. There are some pretty decent sales. http://www.nashbar.com/subcategories.cfm?category=6000101 -

well one of the crazier aspects of the police war against critical mass is that it only applies to the manhattan rides. in brooklyn, they provide police escort.
So I'm just saying we have to be aware of the fact that if we ride around in a "mass" group... we may be a target.
This whole thing really pisses me off. Sorry about the off topic message... just want all to be aware that this happened 4 days ago. -
