any idea why older iphones go for more than new3Gs on ebay?
anyone?
i have the original iphone, which i *cough* inadvertently drowned by watering it with my plants (long story. ahem.)
after some trials and endless tribulations, it came back to life but short circuits out all the time. so much so that, if i want my phone during the day, i need to bring the charger and go into a starbucks or any other place with an electrical socket and 'charge it up' so it'll work for a bit as it only stays on for about 20 minutes, at best.
it also works when plugged into the wall or my apple computer.
so i phoned apple, and, as it was water damage and i was (STUPIDLY?) honest about such, they said the cost to repair it would be $199.
of course, the exact same price as a new one.
but the new one's contract will cost me $15 or so more a month to have what i already have (meaning, if i exchange my phone for the older/original one- my monthly plan and bill stays the same... but if i go all out and get the new one (with a new case of course) i'll end up paying an additional $15/month but will have a faster phone... which i don't really need.)
any recommendations on what to do? (or any ideas as to why the older iphone goes for more than the newer faster 3G? (except you don't have to stand in line?)
oh the dilemmas!
thank you brooklynians!

I believe the older iPhone goes for more because you can unlock it and use it for other networks, while you need to activate the 3G through Apple, so you're forced to get a plan through AT&T to activate it. I'm sure I've gotten a small detail in there wrong, but that's the gist of why they go for more on eBay.

Yeah, I read that somewhere. Sucks about the spillage...

I would take advantage! Sell that waterlogged Iphone and help defray the cost of a new one and service. I was spying the old iphones on ebay as opposed to getting a new gen, and was shocked! People are not only paying astronomical prices, but for broken ones! I got mine on the cheap (100$) with a small crack near the speaker which doesnt effect any functions. But there were bricks on there that were water or otherwise damaged that were still fetching 100$+ Sell now and buy new. The individual plan runs 70$ for unlimited data/200sms/700mins which is more than i got with Verizon and only 10$ more a month. May be more than old iphone plans, but still not bad by comparison to other carriers, and oh yea you'd have a fully functioning phone!

I am so super 100% bummed that I can't get the new iphone on T-Mobile. Getting out of my super cheap contract and switching to AT&T seems like a big pain. Sell your old one to some poor non AT&T person & get the new one!

thanks for all the advice... i think i'm leaning toward exchanging my old one for another old one and defraying the additional $180+ it would cost me (not including the price) to get a new 3g.... and pretending the whole drowning 'incident' never happened...!

sorry about your iphone.
about iphone 1.0 more expensive than 3g, im sure the no-contract and unlock-able factor plays a big role.RockerGirl77 wrote: I am so super 100% bummed that I can't get the new iphone on T-Mobile. me too.

Stick with the one you had and update to 2.0. Unless you need to be up on the Joneses, and have the latest, in my eyes, it's a waste of money all around.
The only "real" difference is the GPS. Speed? The jury is still out on that one with me. I use mine on T-Mobile, using the 5.99 T-Zones plan. There are some things you can't access (ie. AIM) but I'm not heavy into that on my phone. Besides, the iPhone doesn't allow apps like AIM to run in the background, so that is pretty useless. (however, if you jailbreak it, there are apps that do) My sons iPhone has the full net access on T-Mobile for $20/month. He says the 2.0 update has sped the web up considerably for him.
To 3G or not to 3G... I'll say it all depends on what you want out of your phone. In addition, it appears, based on reports on the web, the quality of the plastic cases is not good. Many are developing cracks.
As far as your wet phone, sounds like the battery has been compromised. Check into repair spots on craigslist and other sites to see if you can have it fixed. Or fix it yourself, get parts from http://www.portatronics.com/index.php?cat=c34_Apple-iPhone.html.
Good Luck -
thank you mantic!
that's a great link!
i checked them out but still, for them (or me) to replace the battery its STILL less expensive for me to simply exchange it at the apple store (for $199) and get a new used one...
so dat's what i'll do.
thank you all for your advice/assistance/terrific information!
