According to what's on Gothamist's newsmap, it was a really bad car accident, requiring jaws of life apparatus.

BROOKLYN *SERIOUS-MVA* ATLANTIC AVE & VANDERBILT AVE. FDNY RES2CUE PUT THE HURST TOOL TO WORK FOR AN ENTRAPMENT - HWY-2 AI TEAM NOW REQUESTED FOR THE POSSIBLE AI JOB * 16:08:23 (C) [MNS106] -
apparently it's deemed worthy of the 11 o'clock news on channel 2. just saw the preview.
-
I heard 3 people died, one was ejected 20 feet out of the car. illegal left turn...
-
that's terrible!!
Curious... is there a left turn signal there? I know I've seen a few accidents a few blocks over on Washington where there is no left turn signal...
even the bus who is trying to make a left on to Atlantic from Washington can barely get through...
if there is no left turn signal on Vanderbilt and definitely none on Washington I wonder if we could start some sort of petetion to get one... -
Per NY1 (assuming this is the same accident):
Authorities Investigate Brooklyn Car Accident
August 03, 2008
Police were investigating Sunday evening a Brooklyn car crash that witnesses said involved a jogger.
According to a police officer, the accident happened around 3:45 p.m., when a white Escalade made a left turn on Vanderbilt Avenue and struck a Volkswagen SUV.
Eyewitnesses said a jogger was struck.
As of 6 p.m. Sunday, officials would not confirm the involvement of a jogger, and said the police investigation was still going on.
No deaths occurred on the scene and the injured were transported to different hospitals.

Jogger died. From the NY Post Blotter
A jogger was fatally struck by a car that spun out of control after being hit by another vehicle in Fort Greene yesterday.
The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m., when a Cadillac, whose driver was turning on to Vanderbilt Avenue from Atlantic Avenue, plowed into an Acura.
The Acura then spun around, striking the unidentified, 27-year-old jogger, who died at Brooklyn Hospital.
The Acura driver was in stable condition; the Caddy driver suffered minor injuries. Neither was charged. -
One of my employees was in the car behind the Acura and saw the whole thing from her front row seat. She said she even talked to jogger afterwards but he died in the hospital or at the scene (but not in her presence). Awful.
-
OMG, that is awful!
-
ugh, scary. was the jogger on the sidewalk?
-
This is sad. On Sunday 7/27 I was riding in a cab and when I got to this intersection, noticed police activity. When we drove by, there was an overturned car and glass everywhere. Seems like the second big accident on that corner in a week.
-
Yes, he just stood at the traffic light from what I heard. Patiently waiting for his turn to go...
-
cripes. remind me to be more paranoid. you know, cause I need that. ugh. I hope your employee is ok.
-
After almost dying from getting hit by a dumb driver and breaking 4 ribs , i have begun to have a tremendous fear of standing at the curb waiting for lights to change. Too bad about the jogger

after my jog in the park yestserday, noticed that there was a vigil at that corner for him with about 30 people. -

I saw that too. I rode by on my bike wondering what was going on. When I jog, I usually stand right at that corner too. Very tragic, and seemingly random.

thats horrible!
i was walking on vanderbilt and noticed all the cops too
I can't say i am surprised though
people drive like maniacs between vandy/underhill/washington on atlantic
I cross by underhill to go over atlantic every morning and i have to deal with the turning traffic trying to speed towards the light at vandy (which is red) -
And of course I bike there all the time... maybe I should use a different route.
-
Truely tragic...and it heightens my dislike for 3 ton SUVs like the Escalade. Totally unnecessary on so many levels.
-
It seems there have been quite a few cases of cars hitting pedestrians in the last few months, including that one weekend in June when there were 3 or 4 cases of cars jumping the sidewalks when trying to park.
Its made me try to be more aware of my environment - I had been a little naive thinking I was safe on the sidewalk.... -
Subject: R.I.P.
Jesse was one of my closest friends. I will miss him more than my words could ever say. -

So sorry for your loss.
Yes, everyone please pay attention when you are on Atlantic. The Vandy and Underhill/Washington intersections are very dangerous for motorists and pedestrians alike. There was a horrible accident last year at the intersection of Atlantic and Washington where a dump truck got sideswiped and landed on a car crushing it on the sidewalk. -
I will go out of my way to cross at Clinton rather than Washington or Vanderbilt. While crossing Atlantic is never exactly safe, this intersection is somewhat better than the others.
-
damn, this is scary. I cross that intersection on a bike a lot as well. Now that Carlton is closed, this is the best to get from the neighborhood over to Fort Greene. I always thought it felt unsafe. People drive way too fast on Atlantic and the city either doesn't have the will or the resources to crack down on speeding.
-
I'm not sure how much I trust this, since their reporting of the victim's gender is incorrect, but Brooklyn Paper police blotter suggests there was an arrest in the case. Could have shown a bit more compassion in their headline, I'd say.
"Jog of death
A driver was arrested for killing a woman at Vanderbilt Avenue on Aug. 3.
The 26-year-old woman was jogging at 3 pm along near the corner of Atlantic Avenue, when she was hit by a 36-year-old man driving a white Acura.
The driver was arrested when cops discovered that he was driving with a suspended license."

My symathy goes out to anyone who was familiar with Jesse Tompkins.
If anyone knows of any eyewitnesses to this loss, please provide contact information for them. We are attempting to determine exactly how this accident occurred.
