attempted mugging prospect and underhill and thank you
three teenage boys just tried to mug me on my block between prospect and park on underhill. one tall skinny boy in a white tee shirt asked me to put my bag down and threatened to hit me. i refused to give up my bag and continued to walk, as i lived so close, and the boys followed me. i had trouble taking them seriously because they were so young (under 15) but i was really scared. a woman about my age (mid-late 20s) on a bicycle was coming in the other direction and i told her what was happening and she was generous enough to walk me to my door, and then walked away on her bike, and the one boy who tried to mug me chased after her. to the woman who helped me, if you read this, thank you for helping me to my door and i hope you made it home safely. i called the cops and they told me the boys had tried to mug others in a few block radius, i'm not sure if they were successful. just a warning to all. they scared me a lot, but didn't get anything.

thats a crazy one for sure. becareful and try and look WAYYYY down the block before you walk down it.or if your walking already and it seems funny turn the hell around and walk around the block. worse case you just walk the long way home. better safe than sorry
-
that's terrible, spec. sorry that happened to you.

Glad you're okay. Did the police not come and take a report from you? If not, I'd encourage you to go to the precinct and insist on filing a report. -
Glad you're ok. I implore you to file a report if you didnt, or if the police blew you off.
What the hell is wrong with these kids? I would have never thought of mugging someone when I was young. No one I know would have either, and my friends did some pretty nefarious shit when we were younger.
I've walked extra blocks on several occasions to avoid a group of kids, which is sad, but you have to. -
i was really shaken up but fine-- i did file a report-- and the cops said many others had been calling in about it too. i did not, however, hear back from them about whether they caught the kids. about walking extra blocks to avoid kids-- they popped out from one side of underhill as i was approaching it on prospect-- so did not have time to avoid them. sucks.
-
oops, i meant they popped out at me as i was approaching underhill on park, sorry.

Also from Sunday night, around 9pm as reported to the Park Slope Parents list:
Please be advised that my husband was mugged minutes ago on Plaza
Only a few blocks and just a short time before the other incident, but perhaps unrelated since this one was a case of a single teenager.
Street East b/t Flatbush and Vanderbilt by a teenager with a
switchblade who threatened to kill him if he didn't give him his
iPhone. iPhone or not, please be aware and be careful.
This is almost a sport, at this point. No doubt it comes with similar bragging rights. -
well hate to be devils advocate .. but prospect heights ISNT brooklyn heights im sure most of you know that. its not shocking or surprised. its sad. and sucks to clump ppl together in groups if you see some kids and it looks like trouble it most likely is. but some ppl have to be MORE AWARE. i saw it last night parking my car at 2:16am 2 totally different people just walking down a block heads down texting away on their cell phones

Brooklyn Heights (yep, lived there), Cobble Hill (yep, lived there, too), Carroll Gardens, Park Slope...UES (yep, lived there, too), UWS (yep, lived there, too), Village (yep, lived there, too)...
This happens everywhere. The predators come to where they know there's a feast (local or otherwise).
But yeah, those bright, back-lit displays definitely attract the pests.
Wish they had zapping capabilities, too. -
I would be tempted to put up anonymous signs in the neighborhood warning people (and warning the teens that they're being watched).

You have to be street smart, which involves constant awareness and suspicion. In Brooklyn, you should never ever ever have your cellphone or IPOD out after dark. Whatever you're doing on these devices can wait til you're safely inside. 10 years ago we all survived life without these devices at all, you can wait 5 minutes. Also, let's say you're walking down a dark block and you can't see behind an upcoming wall or something. Just walk in the street along the cars, that way you're more illuminated and have less chance of being surprised if someone jumps out.
Another idea: Carry a fake wallet. Put like 3 dollars in it and some other stuff (business cards, expired credit cards, etc) that will make it seem real. If you get mugged, give this wallet over and say it's all you've got. You could also carry one of your old cell phones and have this ready to hand over too. -
Everyone has great advice, and I agree. I don't mean (and I'm sure neither does anyone else) to suggest that you as the victim were not being smart or deserved what happened in any way. But just for the future, these suggestions may be helpful for everyone, especially if you're new to the area.
I say this w 15 years and no incidents for me or any of my friends -- but we're all very streetsmart.
We've all noticed that people moving into the neighborhood from more yuppie areas, or suburbs, have been more highly proportionately victims of mugging (this refers to people of all races from these areas, not just White people). It's too bad, because with basic streetsmart tips, you can protect yourself in at least a better way.
I echo everyone else's advice. And this advice is for everyone, not just the first poster.
ALWAYS look like you know where you are going. Look ahead with your head; and with your eyes, look WAY ahead, and to each side constantly. Don't ever fumble in your purse or bag while walking, or do anything to divert your attention from looking like you know where you're going. Don't be afraid to walk in the street on a dark block. Don't divert your attention by texting while walking. I would also say, don't take up a ton of soundspace by having loud conversations with your friends in person or on the phone about things like organic turkey sausages. I say that partly in jest, but if someone's seen you before, they're likely to think if you can afford organic turkey sausages, and take up soundspace, you have money and are not paying attention. This is also going to sound obnoxious, but I'd also suggest not wearing anything like jester's caps with bells, or a big Guatemalan poncho-- these things, like talking about organic turkey sausages, also signal that you may have money on your person, and are probably a newish resident not accustomed to being streetsmart.
And yes, do carry a fake wallet. And keep your real one in a very hidden pocket somewhere.
Again, its great that the woman on the bike helped out- there are thankfully lots of people like that in the neighborhood as well.

I'm glad to hear that you're okay and thank you for filing a police report about this incident. Everyone should just try to keep their eyes open and I echo the advice about walking in the street. I do that sometimes when I'm walking home alone after dark.

Subject: So Sorry
I am glad you are well and sorry this happened. -
glad you're ok. same thing happened to a friend of mine on Sterling, between Underhill and Washington, a few months ago.
yes, it can happen anywhere, but i do think you should be especially careful on PH streets, especially coming out of trains, at night or when there's just not a lot of folks around. the stories coming from this same area greatly outnumber what you hear from any other cluster of blocks. please, walk friends home if they're at your place late, etc. -
thanks everyone for all your postings and support. i'm a target i know (white female late 20s) but try to follow other rules people have suggested generally. the fake wallet is a great idea.
one unexpected awesome thing that came out of this-- the deli owner, mohammad, on prospect and underhill is amazing, and let me know that they are completely into the safety of folks on the block. his wife is a cop and is very attuned to neighborhood dynamics. he told me to take the number of the deli (posted on the sign) and call if i ever needed help or a walk home. also, mohammad let me know they will be open 24 hours in two weeks-- so if anyone needs to duck in at any hour that will be helpful. -
I freaking love that bodega. Mohammad is the sweetest. I'm SO glad you're alright. Filing the report is key because of the stats the precinct keeps. They got nothing from you and you helped put documentation of the attempted mugging into the record on behalf of all your neighbors. I thank you.

its always young kids.....my friend got jumped a few months back, in plain daylight on a sunday afternoon for his ipod, he was over at bergen and grand. he said it was a bunch of 15 year olds.
one time i had two 13-15 years old approach me in bed stuy and said "we have a gun" not much else, not like, give me your money we have a gun, or anything like that, i just looked them square in the eyes and laughed and kept walking.
i dont think they knew how to respond to that. -
31 years in the hood, survivor of wild west era and the crack wars. I've no use for either cell phone or ipod.
I laugh at the young teenage boys on my block who pull down their pants to show their underwear front and back below the hips. I can't help it. LOL LOL every time. They've started to cover up when they see me, before I start asking them if they ever fart in public with their pants down. -
crazy thing.. today i was talkin to super in my bldg (195) and he was tellin me he got robbed and attacked on sterling..and its wild to me because he is a older blk dude who has been here for quite a while. i was shocked to hear that this happened to dude. but a warning that IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYBODY
-
I was walking to the Q around 2:00 recently one afternoon. There were a bunch of kids hanging out if front of MET supermarket. They around 14-16 probably. One kid taps his friend on the shoulder and says "yo, white man comin', white man"! He was trying to encourage them to mess with me. He started walking towards me and I stared him straight in the face with a dirty look. I guess it worked because he turned away and went back to his friends.
-
Acknowledging that you hear what someone is saying about you and refuse to be intimidated has worked for me in the past. Just a simple, "Do you think I'm deaf?" worked for me once when a woman in a bodega was bragging about how good a pickpocket she was. She said something about someone "in here just waitin' to get they shit took." I don't know why she thought I wouldn't understand her, but she was shocked when I turned and confronted her.
I've never carried a fake wallet, which is an awesome idea. I just don't have the time to drum up fake stuff, although I guess a couple of those discount card from Duane Reade or Pathmark could work. I usually keep a few bucks in my pants pocket and my wallet tucked away somewhere. I've never had to do it, but a friend of mine taught me the trick and it's worked for him. He threw a twenty on the sidewalk when he was approached. His mugger looked down, as pretty much anyone would when money is being tossed on the ground, and he took off.
Glad spec* is okay. There's another almost identical posting like this on the CH board. Gads. -
hah, I like that throw-the-20-on-the-ground-and-run trick.. Ideally, I'd prefer not to lose anything to one of these people....but if it came down to it and you had little choice, I could see how that would get you out of it safely.. it'll take them a second to collect the money, and once they have it, they'll probably feel it's worth it to just take the small amount left rather than chase you for more (or probably less, in their eyes)..
-
Or you could just run away without throwing the money down.

Black people are more likely to be victims of crime by Black people than white people are. -
ahahah i dunno how to take that.. its a kinda weird statement !
-
so is the idea that it would surprise someone that an older black dude could get mugged
-
na, what shocked me the most is dude is like 5 foot 4 and old as hell, like over 50 for sure. so when he told me 3 kids did this to him i was buggin. i wanted to get on some charles bronson shit and go outside !
-
i still don't understand why you're shocked that a shorter older man got mugged.
-
filmlover44, you must be bugging out, get real!!
